The two variants of this note

The DeNG Band 1 denotes the two variants of this note as Papier Weiss and Papier Sämisch. Not being german, from what I can find about “Sämisch” wrt to notgeld, seems to me to mean beige of sorts. But this variant is described in Numista as blue or white. One of the two variants (in my possession at least) is decidedly bluer in its underprint.

There is however more that separates these two variants - not just the paper.

The picture of A.D. Jørgensen is on one variant (the one in Numista) a simple drawing, but the other variant I have, it is a photo-like print. Also, the Drfa is different - where the Numista variant has it in black, but the variant with the photo-like picture of AD Jørgensen is red.

I've not yet read all the guidelines for editing the numista catalog but I am inclined to update the catalog when I get around to scanning all the notes that I have that are missing in Numista - I think I have at least 50-75 notes missing in numista (which surprises me - although given the amount of notgeld - shouldn't)

In the mean time here is the pictures of my two variants, as I'm not sure how best to update the catalog. You're free to use these images, although later I will scan these - at least they will then be square. These are taken using the mobile.

Add to that - it is not visible from the photos:

The note with serial number 02224 has decidedly a lot whiter paper that the 02980 one, which is beige. I'm not able to feel any differences in stiffness/roughness of the two variant papers.

Sämisch (never heard of this word before) seems to be yellowish to orangey.

I really dislike the distinction of banknote subtypes on the ground of shades of color of paper substrate (especially white shades). There are many factors in paper making that influence color retention and brightness even in good times but in times of struggle where many of such items were produced QC was definitely not first priority.

On top of that with aging of the paper as well as circulation the colors can change even more.

I'm sorry - i totally missed the fact that DeNG has these variants described as 466.4 (the one with the photo) and 466.5 (the one with the drawing)

I see both of these variants have paper differences. I don't mind ignoring paper differences - but having both designs would be nice. So question becomes whether these are two different issues or variants of an issue. (I would prefer the former, given the prominence of the photo on the front)

As an aside, just found out Norwegian does have a word for “Sämisch” → Semsket  - which describes soft-tanned leather. Apparently there's not a direct relation in english, although “suede” is commonly used.

First note has printer's name in black; second note has printer's name in red. Two variants there, imho.

Indeed a sub-type but not an own page worthy new type.

You did see the difference in portrait? That's the main difference I feel. If only printers name different, wholly agree.

It is funny how you stare at something looking for differences and fail to notice the obvious one!!

After careful comparison of the two notes, there are several differences in the detail between the two on the face, and at at least one difference on the reverse: ‘Graastener’ is printed in black ink on 02980, and in grey on 02224.

The type setting is also different between th etwo notes, most obviously in the printer's name - different size as well as colour.

Given the number of differences, I would tend to go for two separate listings.
