Use province (instead of autonomous community) to write addresses in Spain

Numista uses regions for write address in outings, issuing entities, and other pages.

In Spain there are two levels of administrative divisions:

  1. the autonomous communities https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_communities_of_Spain (there are autonomous communities with one or more provinces),
  2. the provinces https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_Spain (and Ceuta, and Melilla).

Numista uses the autonomous communities as region to write address, but address in Spain are written with the province. For example:

My suggestion is use the province instead of the autonomous community as region of Spain. This may be complex to implement, but I think it should taken into account.

Hello,

Our current approach is to use the level-1 administrative division, using GeoNames as the main source.

Having a configuration to use a different level of division per country would be a significant change, which I don't consider a priority.

However we do have a configuration whether the region name should be shown when displaying a city name (e.g. "Vilaseca, Catalonia, Spain" or just “Vilaseca, Spain”).

We currently show the region only for the following countries: United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mexico, India, China, Germany, Argentina, Spain, and South Africa. Feel free to suggest changes to this list.

I vote against showing the name of the autonomous community (it looks strange to see it), but I mention to other referees from Spain so they can give their opinion. @zegeri @oynbcn

As David says, I think I prefer, given how addresses are usually used in Spain, to refer to the Province rather than the Autonomous Community.

In fact, in the Notgeld Spain section, all the existing municipalities are associated with their respective provinces and not with the Autonomous Communities.

I forgot to mention that I would hide the autonomous community in addresses of Spain, but I would keep the filter of autonomous community in the Outings search.

Note: Ideally, provinces would be used, of course, but since that is not possible, hiding autonomous communities is the lesser evil.

I agree with davidhs and oynbcn that the usual way to name places in Spain is by province, not autonomous community. For example, in postal addresses or telephone area codes.

But Xavier tells us that in Numista, the options are to show or hide the first administrative level of GeoNames. And that it is currently shown for a number of countries.

These countries for which the region is shown have something in common: the homonymy of municipalities. In these cases, the region needs to be added to the name to distinguish them.

However, one country where homonymy doesn't exist, Spain, has slipped into the list somehow. Following the example of the French Revolution, but a bit late, Spain eliminated the duplicate names in 1916.

To make the list of countries using the GeoNames region in Numista consistent, Spain should be excluded.

For example:
Toledo, Spain
Toledo, Ohio, United States
Toledo, Oregon, United States

Like with France

Paris, France
Paris, Texas, United States
Paris, Maine, United States

I did not think about these cases…

…but this problem does not occur in Spain (I really did not know that).😅

I removed the name of the autonomous community in Spanish city names; for example “Valladolid, Spain”, “Vilaseca, Spain”.
