thanks so much. I'd tried "Regens 40 1829" coin" in Google and got nowhere, because the date was wrong. It still looks like a 2 (to me) for the third number, but it can't be so thanks for your help. Very much appreciate your speedy response.

a couple more questions:

so is the coin 40 Real? 

What does “Pataco” mean in the Numista entry?

 Rather than 182? it looks more like 18?2 so is 1812 year.

 It was the denomination, 1 of was equal to 40 Reis [hence to 40 on it]

so is the coin 40 Real? 

 

 I had to look it up, and yes 40 Real though technically 40 Reis as 

only 1 is called 1 Real and 2 or more are called Reis as plural. 

 Guessing it is the same as Penny and Pence in UK coins. :)
