why is the rim a different color?

edit: this isnt the only coin i own with this thing. this only happens to german coins i think.

Yes, that is normal. It is brass plated steel, and the plating usually doesn't cover the edge.

Being a clad planchet coin much like the US dimes, quarters and half dollars on the edge you can see the coloration of the cladding and the core material.  There's a good picture of the edge on the coin page.  N#658
