I found this coin, underneath a thick crust of dirt, in a coin lot.
Diameter: 10,4-10,7 mm;
Weight: 1,24 g;
Material: AE
It seems to be a late roman/early byzantine or early medieval AE4 or nummus, but I can't find this exact type anywhere. Unforntunately, the name of the Emperor isn't preserved.
The averse shows the portrait of an emperor, looking right, cuirassed (for what I can see, he's not draped). His hairstyle looks kinda odd, almost helmet-shaped, but the pendilium behind shows, it's porbably meant to be the ordinary hairstyle, diademed. “D N” is legible at the start of the averse inscription (at least the N is fully preserved), possibly the end reads “VS P F A”. It seems not to read “AVG”, it could also be “P P A” or something alike. The first letter of the Emperor's name is partly preserved but illegible (possibly H, M or A?).
The reverse shows what seems to be the Emperor, standing, holding a spear (for it seems not to carry a standart at the top) in his right hand, possibly restling his left hand on a shield (as the line, probably representing his arm, seems to reach all the way down to the border of the coin, which I interpret to be an arm, resting on a shield). The military dress of the figure is well noticable (maybe not that well in the photos, so I attached two pictures with different lighting and another one, with some rough lines, showing what I believe to see there), ruling out female figures, so it's obviously no Victory standing or advancing. In the left field there's a letter or symbol, resembling an E, turned left 90°. Below there seems to be two strokes or traces of anothe sign. There's no inscription visible.
I really don't know what to do with this coin. Weight and diameter matches the 4th/5th/6th century AE4/nummi (revalued in the late 5th century to 1½, later 2½ nummi, from 498-512 5 nummi, after, again, valued 2½ nummi). The overall averse-style seems to match the late 5th century (it reminds me of ostrogotic coinage portraits). The reverse-type is, if it really shows an Emperor standing, with spear and shield, probably rare. RIC X names two types with matching descriptions: Honorius 1368 and Majorian 2619, but the existence of the Majorian-type seems to be doubtful, for RIC doesn't show this type on its plates and I can't find any specimen of this kind anywhere. It may could be the Honorius type, but that one still is extremely rare and it doesn't seem to show the symbol in the left field. The traces and the gab of the name of the Emperor could match H[ONORI]VS, though. Maybe it's an imitation?
I really appreciate any kind of help, identifying this coin. Thank you in advance!
And sorry if some of my phrasing sounds odd - I am no native speaker, but I tried my best without help from AI.^^
