The shop I work at has an 1830 large cent, and I believe the pictures shown of the two letter types are backwards. My reference is The Official Red Book, and we also got lit up with complaints on eBay when we posted our picture of our coin with and without the Numista picture. Could someone please check this out for me?
I was just looking at the PCGS CoinFacts app in more detail and I’m more confused than before. The picture you’ve posted is on the app and looks very clear with the positioning of the last ‘S’ in ‘STATES’ to the right of the leaf on the reverse, but then the main picture of the large letters coin shows a picture with the ’S’ slightly behind the upper leaf just like the medium letters variety. I think we may just have to send it in for grading and let the chips fall where they may. The literature I’ve seen so far is not clear to me, and I’m not taking advice from people on eBay looking to rip us off. Thanks for your help though. If you think it would help, I could post pictures of our coin for reference.
I'm afraid we were wrong. Getting closer with the spacing between letters.
The location of the last S in STATES relative to the leaf in the wreath is not the correct way to determine Large from Medium. These are all Large Letter varieties in PCGS for 1830. Note there are 3 with the last S past the end of the leaf and 3 even with the end of the leaf.
This shows the larger and uneven spacing between the letters in STATES for the Medium Letters and the smaller even spacing for the Large Letters. Note that the last S in STATES is the same location on these two coins.
This is how USA Coin Book describes the difference. Note that the last S in STATES is the same location on these two coins.
And here is what's in the Red Book:
So, using the last S relative to the leaf is incorrect. Everything here also applies to the 1831.
