Help ID Papal States 1/2 Baiocco

4 posts • viewed 89 times

I have a Papal States ½ Baiocco that doesn't quite fit any of the coins in the Numista catalog.

Obverse legend: BENEDICT XIV M V 17 50, I'm unsure about the 17 50

Reverse legend: MEZZO BIAOCCO FERRARA

My coin is pretty rough, but I don't see a date on the reverse, and the obverse legend doesn't match any of the cataloged coins. The V 17 50 could be VI ? SO, or something similar, but that doesn't match anything I can find. The BENEDICT XIV M V is clear enough.

Anyone have any more details that might help? I have the obverse photo rotated to show the 17 50 or I? SO at the top.

The KM 139 has BENEDICT XIV • P • M • A • V

The KM 137 has BENEDICT XIV • P • M • A • IX

The N#450336 has BENEDICT XIV P M A VII

The N#460457 has BENEDICT XIV • P • M • A • X

Weight 5.1, diameter 28.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, it's not V 1750! BUT VI 1750

Interesting coin!

There were many legend variants for these Ferrara copper coins of Benedict XIV, and KM does not list them all (the specialty Muntoni catalog is better).

It is worth noting that your coin contains an error by the die maker who engraved the regnal year VI instead of XI.  Benedict's reign began in August 1740, so 1750 contained year X and year XI (year VI ran from August 1745 to August 1746).

Thanks to both of you!
