Currently when I add “composition: silver” as a wish criteria, it automatically includes all silver plated coins.  This could make people think someone is interested in a lot more of their coins than they really are.

It would be good if there was a way to specify only non-plated coins, or add “plated” as a criteria to “What I don't wish”.

If you find silver plated coins classified as silver, file modification request to change it. Numista has plated metal category.

IMHO only problem for search is that Composition searches material and not type of composition.

Change it to what?  If the “Plated metal” category is used (e.g. Gold plated silver) searching for silver or gold both work. The search does not exclude material being plated. The same happens for the "Clad" category. All Cu-Ni clad Cu coins can be found with composition Cu-Ni or Cu.

If search for silver looks up silver plating and not limited to core silver, then that's a bug.

It's by design and cannot be considered a bug.  An option could be added to decide which (plate/clad or core or both) to search but that's a different topic.
