The Satara State was a Maratha princely state, established in 1818 after the Third Anglo-Maratha War, and ruled by the Bhonsle dynasty, descendants of the Maratha founder Shivaji. The state was annexed by the British East India Company in 1849 under the Doctrine of Lapse. The city of Satara was the historical seat of the Chhatrapati and is the headquarters of the Satara District in Maharashtra.
