1982 D Small Date [solved]

Hello,

I am somewhat perplexed by the statement on the subject coin line saying , 2 known examples. What does that mean ? To make all this small date large date/ Zinc , Copper thing more confusing . The Whitman Folder I have has 4 coins for 1982(Large Date Copper,Small Date Copper, Large Date Zinc & Small Date Zinc)  and only the first 3  for 1982D. The list here only breaks it down by Large Date /Small Date. So there is no 1982D Copper Small Date I surmise. I have weighed all mine to make sure I identified copper from Zinc.

I am flummoxed.

Hello,

You can pass on the information to the referee so that he or she can give you a precise answer on the matter in question, and possibly amend the error made.

Have a nice day.

And if not, could you send us some photos of the piece in question to make sure it's not a “big date”

There is no mistake.  Only 2 known examples of the copper (3.1 g) 1982D small date coin means exactly that.  It is not really considered a variety the way the 1982(P) small date is. Most catalogs don't even recognize their existence. The couple that are known were from isolated copper planchets that found their way into the zinc planchets.

These are the varieties you can collect:

Copper

1982(P) Large date

1982(P) Small date

1982D Large date

1982S Small date (Proof)

Zinc

1982(P) Large date

1982(P) Small date

1982D Large date

1982D Small date

Don't bother with any change requests. No error was made except by members thinking they have a small date 1982D copper when they don't. That's why Numista shows those ridiculous values. You did the right thing by weighing your 1982D coins.

AHA!! Said the blind man. Just realized the Zincs are on the next type listing at the beginning--- so case solved . Thanks for helping me through a senior moment!! 🤪

No problem, we all do similar things.  At least you're not one of the 30-60 members that have one of the two 1982D copper small date coins.
