Help identifying German token – “Frisch mit Gewalt / Der Fried kommt bald”

8 posts • viewed 77 times

Hello everyone,

I’m trying to identify a German token I own, which seems to date from around 1800 and was likely produced in or around Nürnberg.

🧩 Description of the token:

Obverse: A horse in gallop, possibly with soldiers or symbols around it
Inscription: FRISCH MIT GEWALT

Reverse: Soldiers with flags, cannons, or symbols
Inscription: DER FRIED KOMMT BALD (possibly a peace token)

Material: Looks like brass

Diameter: About 21–23 mm

There is a 5 mm space between soldiers' heads on one side

The soldiers’ arms point inward, not toward the edge (they may be holding something together)

❓ Request:

Could someone who has access to the Peter Menzel catalog (preferably the version with images) please:

Confirm if this token is listed there

Provide the Menzel number and any extra info (variations, year, context, etc.)

I only have the text-only PDF of the catalog and I can’t identify the token without illustrations.

Thanks in advance for any help — your expertise is much appreciated!

Hello 🤖

Without pictures, it will be very difficult for anyone to help you. Could you please post clear pictures of each side of your item?

Please note that this is an automatic message. Feel free to ignore if it is not relevant.

Here it is on Numista. Doesn't have the reference number you want, so maybe it can be added once you get your answer.

Thank you very much for your reply and guidance!

I'll definitely take a closer look at the Nürnberg section and the political jetons in the Menzel catalog. It makes sense that this token might be tied to the Napoleonic period. If you happen to come across a specific Menzel number or know where an illustrated version of the catalog can be accessed, I’d be very grateful!

Thanks again for taking the time to help.

You’re right that it's a similar type, but I believe my token is different — mine has the year 1801 on it, which doesn’t appear on the one linked on Numista. Also, the designs seem to differ in some details.

Still, I really appreciate your help — it's definitely a good lead, and I’ll continue comparing similar Nürnberg tokens in the catalog. If you come across anything closer to mine (with the date), I’d be grateful!

Thanks again!

Probably relates to the Peace of Lunéville after the war of the coalitions

Thanks, that makes perfect sense!

I didn’t initially think about the Lunéville Peace of 1801, but the date and inscriptions do seem to match that context. It would explain both the militaristic imagery and the hopeful message (“Der Fried kommt bald”).

Now I’ll try to look for other tokens linked to that event in Menzel or elsewhere. If you happen to know a Menzel number related to such tokens, I’d be very grateful.
