help with a Roman Coin [solved]

Hello all,

Thinking of buying a coin off of a friend and I wanted to get info on what it is before buying as he doesn't know.

Specs:

  • 1.98 in weight
  • 17mm which should be an AE

Hope to hear what this is!

Hello — It's a so-called Greek Imperial coin of Emperor Commodus. You can read almost all of his name in Greek:

ΚΟΜΟΔΟC (or ΚΟΜΟΔΟΣ)

It's not in the Numista catalogue, but it's likely to be somewhere on the Wildwinds page for Commodus. If you search for “provincial coins” it will get you at the start of the section where your coin should be, the first city being Abila.

This is a tough one given the state, but I got something.

First of all, on the obverse there's a K at 1 hour position. It means it's written in greek so it's a provincial.

Searching here, almost gave up since our provincials' catalog is very incomplete but got a reasonably compatible coin at the last page: N#195773 .

Looking again at the photo, at the right side it appears to be written ΚΟΜΟΔΟ. So we can be sure that's Commodus. With that I can go to search at RPC. A few more filters beyond size and weight (ΚΟΜΟΔΟ at obverse text and standing at reverse design) and this is the search result: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/search/browse?reign_id=61&obverse_inscription_simplified=%CE%9A%CE%9F%CE%9C%CE%9F%CE%94%CE%9F&reverse_design=standing&weight_min=1&weight_max=3&diameter_min=15&diameter_max=20&page=1

After looking at the 48 results, it's clear that your coin is a Commodus provincial from Nicopolis ad Istrum.

Filtering a little more: https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/search/browse?city_id=657&reign_id=61&obverse_inscription_simplified=%CE%9A%CE%9F%CE%9C%CE%9F%CE%94%CE%9F&reverse_design=standing&weight_min=1&weight_max=3&diameter_min=15&diameter_max=20&page=1

But now, which one… That's the part I'm still struggling (but I can discard the ones with animals), a little help from the experts would be useful here.

There are different reverses with different deities, but they all have nearly the same reverse text.

If we fail to continue, the Numista link above is a fit placeholder.

Edit: Camerinvs finished writing faster.
