Help identifying Papal Medal – Pope Paul VI, 1963 (Gold?)

2 posts • viewed 150 times

Hi everyone!

I thinking about to acquire this papal medal featuring Pope Paul VI with the inscription “PAULUS VI PONT MAX ANNO MCMLXIII” on the obverse and “IN NOMINE DOMINI” on the reverse. It strongly resembles a 1963 Vatican medal designed by Giampaoli (Ø 20 mm, AU 7.1g, gold 900), sometimes auctioned as a gold version.

However, I’m unsure whether mine is actually gold or if there is a bronze (or gilt bronze) version that looks identical. I THINK, but not 100% sure, that the medal in question weighs about 11g and has a strong golden tone.

I’m not 100% sure about the weight, as I don’t trust the scale they were tested on.

Can anyone help confirm:

  1. If this exact type was also issued in bronze (with this high-luster finish)?
  2. How to tell if it’s the gold or bronze version, beyond weight?

Any help or references appreciated! I’ve attached photos of both sides.

Thanks in advance

Bonjour,

Un joli zoom sur ces poinçons Italiens devrait confirmer l’or 900‰:
