Help Verify FERDINAND 8 REALES [solved]

Hi everyone,

I hope you're all doing well.

I'm looking for some help from the community to verify whether or not a coin I recently bought is genuine. The coin is a Ferdinand VII 8 Reales, and you can find the reference here:
N#3767

It weighs 26.5 grams, which seems okay, but I'm raising concerns because it failed the ping test (you can see the video here:
https://youtube.com/shorts/T3pRDUF5f1A?si=yqXaBToOwqQdL7Ts) and also failed the specific gravity test, which came out at 11.2 — quite far off from the expected ~10.3.

To double-check the scale and method, I tested other coins in my collection (Maria Thaler, 2.5 Gulden Willem III, and Peace Dollar), averaging 10 tests per coin. Their specific gravity results were all within the expected range of ~10.0 to 10.4, so I'm fairly confident in the process.

I’ve asked for a refund from the seller, but they’re now asking for an expert opinion before proceeding. Since I’m not an expert myself, I’d really appreciate any thoughts or guidance from those more experienced in identifying authentic 8 Reales coins.

Thanks so much in advance for your time and help!

Edge photo, diameter, and thickness would be helpful.

The diameter is 3.95 cm and thickness is 0.25 cm

All things considered I believe it to be genuine and see no significant red flags to my eye. Honest wear, details all seem correct, and specifications are within acceptable tolerances. I think you are overthinking this.

What absolute rubbish HJG „no significant red flags“! You clearly missed the fact that the OP stated he believed the coin doesn’t ping like a silver coin should and it produces a high result on specific gravity test.

These factors are clearly reason to „over think“ about the coin, BrokeStudent there are a few Apps that listen to the ping of silver coins to validate the sound, most are subscription but often have a free period after download - I would recommend confirming your ear with one of them.

Granted the images don’t look like a crappy Chinese fake at first glance (maybe that is what HJG meant with „no red flags“) but the images don’t look great either, one could assume the coin (from the images) has either been under water for a long time or is a fake, from my point of view it looks like a coin that has been environmentally damaged from the sea - but of course that would be a perfect way to pass off a fake also, because it accounts for all the imperfections, it also could easily be a contemporary fake that has been environmentally damaged and recently found again.

An XRF test would give you the metal content, which might give you something better than „expert opinion“ but ultimately I think you should stick with your gut feeling about its authenticity and ask for your money back, the seller should oblige without you having to prove either way, it is up to them to prove it is authentic rather than visa versa in an ideal world.

My opinion;

+ could possibly be a contemporary fake that has spent some time in the sea.

+ trust your instinct, the ping and specific gravity tests.

Speaking of absolute rubbish,  CLEARLY, you insist on being an overly opinionated arrogant twit over and over again don't you?

Did you previously go under the name HarryG?

Whats your problem, I simply gave my opinion - just as you did.

You have to be careful about evaluating handheld ping testing by ear. I used the Precious Coin Test ping test app on all three coins in the video. It was the free version so I was limited to what coins I could check against. I chose a Peace Dollar as it is close in weight, diameter and purity of the OP's coin. Here are the results:

1st coin
2nd coin
3rd coin

And here is a 1971 Cu-Ni clad copper Eisenhower dollar:

1971 non silver dollar
