Please help ID this 12mm European (English?) coin [solved]

Sorry I can’t get clearer pictures of this small (12mm) and very thin coin. One side seems to feature a fancy crown (or sailing ship??) and partial legend VLTRA. The other side’s legend looks like HABERT REG (not sure if there could be a letter before the H) around a fancy A in a dotted circle. I’d be very grateful for any suggestions to point me towards a proper attribution. Thanks!

Looks similar to these:

N#104708

N#343383

Thank you so much! They certainly do look very similar (especially the second one linked, though the name differs). I never would have thought it would be German! And I’ve never heard of ‘counter tokens’. I’ll have to continue the research now that you’ve kindly jump-started it in a totally unexpected direction. Thank you!!

The maker is J.J. Habelt. There's a few out there from the Fauver collection. Sorry I can't do links, but you'll find them.

Thank you for these very helpful ‘leads’. I will definitely pursue them. Much appreciated!

I searched the name JJ Halbert and ‘Fauver’ as you recommended (thanks again!) and found several examples, but they were all 19mm. Does anyone know the significance of smaller 12mm varieties? I’ve never collected jetons.

I see your interest is piqued. While I'll never turn away a currency coin, for me nothing quite tingles the spine as a little known jeton.

And they are ALL pretty much little known. And even better, are relatively inexpensive.

Basically counters were used like an abacus for tallying figures when accounting was still kept in Roman numerals. Rows were decimal in that they were 1's, 10's, 100's, etc. The smaller counters were halves. With the introduction of Arabic numerals, the use gradually declined.

I also have a small one (13mm) very similar to yours.

This was made by J.C. Gerner and is very similar to N#104708 but not quite the same.

This is the 1850's and very late in a tradition that began in 15th century. From here, counters became gaming tokens.

Thank you for the wonderful education!
