I'm laughing at this but I was seriously about to ask if it was okay to add some obviously fake 24k gold foil hello kitty and sonic the hedgehog banknotes the kids picked up at a recent comic/toy convention. They are shiny and i'm sure the guardhouse sleeves I put them in are worth more than they are, but they make the gf and kids happy.
The only reason I would want to add them is to just have them listed in my collection on the site. I almost wish we had an option for a private entry without submitting it for everyone else.

I have to agree, I recognise that Hello Kitty and fantasy superhero notes are the rage for youngsters now (Yes I feel like I am turning 234 next week not 49 saying that). But do we really need to see that rubbish next to the beautiful classical ancient coins, silver crowns, gold and even 20th circulating coins that actually do their job.
However I feel we should be inclusive and these people open a acquisitions thread everymonth for anything other than standard circulating coins and the classics some of us collect. I have nothing against collecting. People buy Powercoin products of Niue, obviously because they like them and collecting anything is a million times better than staring into a screen all day, or being poisoned by toxic social media.
Basically some of us may think that material is rubbish, but too many people its not so and we must respect that. Allow space for it by all means, Power coin and Hello Kitty purr dollars are currency, but not as many of us may know it.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Some people actually collect this, there are numerous different types of Monopoly sets and currencies. Also many other board games often have play money that goes with them.
Heck I remember we learnt counting and cash at primary school with plastic play money coins and I use to try and steal it, as it was better quality than my Toyland play money I had.
I know for a fact many of us got our start with coins and notes, from play money and board game “money”. As a kid playing with Monopoly and game of life dollars, I always dreamed I would have the real thing eventually.

I think that's the fun in collecting things and if the thrill of the chase brings someone joy then that's what really matters.
I put them in the books and treat them with the same care as my own collection because it brings them joy and it makes them feel included in my hobbies. I stopped short of adding them to the inventory here simply because I don't really know much about them and I assume they were something the vendor snagged on alibaba in bulk and I wasn't sure where the line should be drawn.

I'm not even going to lie. I'm in love with the care that whoever submitted these took with the photographs.

and here in the definition: Play money - Banknotes used in board games and role play, for example play shops.
As Colnect found out, more categories means more members and more members means more revenue from advertisements. If it keeps this site free for members, why not?
I would like for Numista not to become something like Colnect, no thank you.
The problem with exonumia is that there is no end to them and there very heterogenous nature makes them bloat the catalog. Similar to how any little die variant is a separate page for ancient coins. Even with our categories we have now there are billions of objects that could be added they would burry what Numista once was in a mountain of trash (we literally have washers and metal scrap in the catalog).
People probably though only of a handful of 19th century issues that pop up now and then in coin lots not literal modern board game items.
I find that hard to believe when the example used was a 2 Euro Cents and the discussion was about whether to add the words "or by children in role play ("playing shop")" to the definition.
Numista went on a very slippery road when it start to add NCLT, like the Niue-things. I suggest to split the cataloge in a section for real coins, who have, or had buying-power, which will also include some exonumia, and another section for playmoney, beer-bottle-caps, washers, buttons and whatever somebody suggests, but all this things
should not be mixed up with real coins, which is annoying for every collector.

I think the idea was that if something look like it might be money and someone is curious if it is or not, that this is the place they can easily look it up and find out.
For example, lets say that someone in a country that has never seen the game monopoly in their life comes across a stack of the bills. They might think they have struck it rich, only to come here and do an image search and learn that it's in fact a board game note.
I would personally like to see the site have a “personal” category when creating catalog items that does not submit to the masses for items that we might find useful to track with our collection that might not fit in elsewhere. But I suppose any rejected change becomes a private entry the way it is now so maybe there isn't any reason for it.

It makes sense that the site owner wants to attract all the attention…
also there is a blurry line between the rubbish and the real stuff. It’s a very blurry line. I am in full agreement with you, “no words”, but the arguments have gone on long before now. They go in circles.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
I have a few of these, and one that isn’t even in the catalog. Unfortunately I wish I could omit it from the smallest coin/banknote record, because it’s the smallest one I have by far
Did you know that Pluto is still a planet in Illinois and New Mexico and has de facto recognition as a planet in Arizona?

I also have a bunch of weird coins/tokens and whatevers that I like and will keep, but I log them in a separate collection on Numista so they don't mess up the statistics of my “serious” collection 😜
Just call me Bram
No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!

I’m thinking about splitting my collection into US, Worldwide, and Exonumia

Yea, it's a great idea to split your collection up - the records change if you choose a different collection.
So you can keep your silly things itemised whilst maintaining proper statistics.
I've got Pound Sterling, Crown Dependencies, British Overseas Territories, British Armed Forces, Foreign, Bullion, and other.
Which is more or less how I have it stored. Tempted to make an Empire category, but I don't really have much that could go in there. Might merge it with Armed Forces, since that's my current “British currency abroad”. Shows how limited it is. 😛

Agreed, I've spent a lot of time sorting everything out.
I'm kind of in the same boat, I have a small collection of pirate ship themed coins, so I plan on creating a “shipyard” and I also have a few Aviation themed coins, not sure what to call that group. I've got 2 FAO coins, so eventually I see myself making an FAO collection one day.
Right now I've just been focused on trying to get 1 from every country and filling the zoo :)
