Hello, and I hope you are well!

I am requesting the creation of the issuer “Hwabs of Samarqand” as a 4th level issuer under the section “Samarqand (ancient)”.

The Hwabs were a Hunnic dynasty that ruled the city-state of Samarqand at the end of Sogdian late antiquity. The usurpation of Samarqand by Shishpir and the Ikhshid Dynasty in the early 7th century AD brought to an end the centuries long Hunnic rule of the city, making the Hwabs the final rulers of Samarqand before the beginning of the early medieval period in Sogdiana.

At the moment, coins from the Hwabs of Samarqand are grouped together with an assortment of Antiochus imitations under the 3rd level “Samarqand (ancient)” issuer. As per Numista's issuer guidelines, “Only when the territory of an issuer suffers a sudden, significant, and long-term change, resulting in a discontinuity of its currency, then the change result in a different issuer”. The rule of the Hwabs in Samarqand is considered to be a completely separate period from both the later “Ikhshids of Samarqand” and the earlier pre-Hunnic Antiochus imitations (which should remain in the issuer “Samarqand (ancient)”, as not enough is known about the rulers of the city-state during this period to give them an explicit dynastic issuer).

Name: “Hwabs of Samarqand”

Wikidata: Ancient Central Asian history is not well documented or known of, so there is no Wikidata code for the Hwabs. In place of that, I have linked a paper discussing coins and rulers of this dynasty.

Coins: N# 197514, N# 197516, N# 197517, N# 197518, N# 197519

Predecessor: "Samarqand (ancient)", “Hephthalite Empire”

Successor: “Ikhshids of Samarqand” (Currently “Kingdom of Samarqand”, pending a renaming request I submitted)

Map Locations: Uzbekistan

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

We use “Issuer” hierarchies for geography, but we use periods / ruling groups (dynasties) / rulers for covering diefferent eras in the same geography.

Should Hwabs of Samarkand be a ruler group for Sogdiana > Samarkand?

Looking at the coins for the issuer Samarkand (ancient), I think what is needed is a set of Ruling Authorities to cover the various time periods for which we have coins:.

I see “Antiochos imitations” applied as a descriptor for all the coins struck between 200 B.C. and the Hwabs,  so we start like this:

Dates …….. Ruling Authority

- 200 - 575    Unknown rulers who made the Antiochos imitations

575 - 601       Hwabs of Samarkand

So Hwabs of Samarkand has been added as a ruling authority.

If there is a way to divide the earlier period, let me know.  Otherwise we just leave the Ruling Authority as “Unknown” for these earlier coins.

It looks like we also need at least one currency system added which would fit with the obol-drachm units.

Thank you for your help so far! There isn’t enough known about the issuers of the pre-Hwab coins unfortunately. At least one of the types is possibly from Kidarite rule in the region, but it’s still up for debate, and the rest are still relatively unknown.

For the currency system, a drachm system like the Seleucid Empire or Greek Poleis would work best. We don’t fully understand the imitative issues, so much is still unknown. They probably circulated alongside other currencies from the area such as Greco-Baktrian or Kushan issues.

Name: Drachm

Issuer: Samarqand (ancient)

Sub/super units: Hemiobol (1/12), obol (1/6), hemidrachm (½), drachm (1)

The curremncy is now in place, and I have added it to all the silver coins (hemiobol, obol, etc.).

If we ever have an idea on how the bronze or copper coins fit, we can add that later.
