D.H.F. Somerset Issac Newton £1 note anomaly

Hi all,

when I was a teenager back in the 1980s, I read an article in the Sunday Magazine; a supplement in the News Of The World newspaper.

It referred  to a D.H.F. Somerset £1 note featuring Sir Isaac Newton, specifically an anomaly below the book on Newton’s lap on the reverse side of the note where usually one would only see buttons from his coat. In this particular note, they referenced an unusual feature there instead, which covers the area where one would normally see the buttons.

At that time, I checked my notes and located one as described. It was estimated in the article to be worth £15 back then.

I retained the note and stumbled across it recently, but I can’t find any record on the Internet of either this note (with unusual feature) or the magazine article.

I would therefore if anyone could help me to identify what that feature is and why it is different.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Can you post pictures of your note? I can compare it to mine then.

I have 4 pieces all in UNC condition and they are all the same as those JB Page series

Probably a macro image is needed. It's either damage to the note's surface or missing ink in the form similar to a bunged up paper-clip.

Mine is the same as Ahkai's

Interesting, I've not heard of this one before. Mine very clearly show the buttons as Ahkai's.

It looks to be some sort of printer error rather than a distinct variant. Suppose these things happen in any physical work.

I wouldn't expect it to have a huge value today, the error isn't particularly dramatic & notes aren't as widely collected as coins.

I've seen all sorts from double-printed, “ghost”-printing, incorrect cuttings to extreme misalignment. £1 error notes seem to float ~£30 area for dramatic ones. So yours might be in the £15-£25 area.

I'd love to be wrong though! 🙂

Thanks for sharing.

I have three here on my desk now.

H40, J09, B68 prefixes, all are the same as Ahkai's note.

Cannot clearly see what the difference is - can you post a better quality close up?
