Greece - 100 Drachmai - 1978 - Bill Size [solved]

7 posts • viewed 96 times

I am not a collector of Greek bills but I do have two of the following item: 100 Drachmai, 1978 (P# 200b).

They seem to be identical except they are slightly different size to each other: 155 vs 158mm wide; and 66 vs 67mm. The larger one matches the spec found in the online catalogue.

Is this “normal”? Is there an explanation, aside from someone having cut the edges?

They both have identical watermarks, etc. I'm not sure if one if a fake/reproduction of the other.

Thanks.

I also have two of those type, I will measure mine when I get back from work.

The smaller one has some wrinkles that will make it seem smaller and may have shrunk some as it circulated. Notice it is about 2% smaller in both directions.

I measured mine which are both UNC.

One is 157x67mm and the other is 158x67mm

Thank you for all of your replies. It seems like some variation exists in the bills, as well as I didn't realize that usage could shrink a bill by that much.

Most banknotes are made with a cotton-linen blend -so if they're accidentally left in pant pockets & put in the dryer, they will shrink in size.
