Can't we get a new field in the parameters like KM# (Yes/No), which will tell the catalog which NUMBER to present the coin in the catalog, when I use numista?
I have seen France invading numista with their local numbering system, Canada and the UK as well plus quite a few others. I do not think that's OK, since most of us members have no access to those local catalogs and still have our collections and doubles lists in KM# order!
If the “switch” in the parameters is set to KM# = Yes, Numista will have to find the KM# amongst the 10 possible numbers and use it, if the KM# = No, then numista will just use the first number in number of the 10 possible ones (like today).
The parameter would of course be put to KM#=No as pre-set value, to assure that nobody will feel any change if not wanted!
I think this would be easy to and fast to introduce?
I am for this concept but it should apply for all reference catalogs on a coin page. I would guess that many of those collecting French coins would want to make sure the Franc number is first, others want Schön, others Kann, L&M, Hartill, etc. depending on what type coins they are looking at. Then think about all the banknotes, medals and tokens with their own set of catalogs.
Also, posting this idea to improve Numista on the Numista coin catalog forum is good to get votes for/against and a discussion but it will basically be ignored by those who can approve it and make it happen and definitely rejected by one of the Catalog administrators because it's not a request to create or modify a reference catalog.
It needs to be posted in the Numista website forum.
Seems to be urgent to decide of a chaos in the numista catalogs or not? We're members with our KM catalogs, which we still have and the KM# numbers are still updated in numismaster.com!
I fully understand, and partly agree with the proposal.
In fact, when I open a catalog page (search), KM is the default option, even if I will search a note; so I feel is not so much chaos. Anyways, if I will search for catalog code, I may know the letters to type, or it is very easy to find by name, author, etc.
About what should be the order of codes, I feel Krause has loads of mistakes and is not clear on coding system, but undoubtedly is the most used catalog by collectors.
Now, if you search using the catalog code, it will show results, no matter the order the codes have. But I feel is more comfortable for users to have them in certain order: First the most commonly used, then the local catalogs, cause they usually are more accurate and detailed, ald then the rest of world/regional catalogs.
Therefore, on the countries where I'm referee, the order applied is matching said “rule”. I know this is not stated in catalog Guidelines, but is more a matter of common sense (the less common of the senses 🤣).
Just 10 options: you understand binary, or you don't.
