Tariffs on Coin orders to the U.S.

I was about to place an order with the RCM (Royal Canadian Mint) today and I thought that I better call them ahead of time to find out if I'm going to face a tariff when shipping the order here to the U.S.  The gentleman I spoke with at the RCM this morning said that if I spend $800 (USD) or more there will be a 25% tariff added by the shipping company in order to deliver it to the United States.  But he said that purchases under $800 (USD) will be exempt from the new tariff.

Note:  I'm not posting this to turn the conversation into a political one.  I prefer to leave the politics out of it.  I'm simply posting to raise awareness of how international coin purchases might be impacted when shipping here to the U.S.  Also note -- it's a constantly changing situation; so it's a good idea to verify with the vendor/shipper for your own specific coin purchases before placing international orders.

I’m curious the other way round. I typically order the US sets on behalf of a friend. typically UPS charges a hefty 20% custom; I wonder how much more it would be now once it enters Canada. Though im probably going to tell him we’ll wait a few months and hopefully let things settle

Ouch.  I'm sorry to hear that.  I don't know the answer to that one.  The tariff situation between the U.S. and Canada keeps changing by the hour.

Here's a discussion this week about tariffs and the effect on coin sales:
