County of Tyrol - 3 Kreuzer - New or Variant?

Discussion about Tyrol, County of • 3 Kreuzers - Leopold V Landesfürst

I have a variant of this coin with an obverse legend of “LEOPOLDVS:D:G:AR:AV” and reverse legend “:DVX:BVR:C(3)OMES: TIRO”.  The reverse also has a different flourish between the shields.  Please advise if a new entry is warranted or just added as a variant to N# 45177 or N# 128433.

Here is a nearly identical coin listed as MT# 480 (mine has only “TIRO” instead of “TIROL” on the reverse): https://www.ma-shops.com/saenn/item.php?id=34291&curr=USD

We already have the Leopold V 3 kreuzer as two types depending on whether the value (3) is at the top or the bottom of the reverse:

N#45177

That's a difference that affects the appearance more than a change in spelling/abbreviation of the legend.

Ultimately, it's up to the referee for smaller changes like this.

This one seems to be a hybrid with the number position of one and the portrait style of the other.

I've uploaded photos here:

It would be great to list all the MT# variants with brief descriptions of the differences, but I don't have access to the Moser Turskey books.

@apuking and @SouthViking I'd say MT# 480 and MT# 481 would warrant separate listings, as they have different legends and different arabesques between shields on the reverse.  The obverse differs too, as MT# 480 seems to have dots around the top of the crown, where MT# 481 doesn't.  Also, the hover-over picture for MT# 480 is really a picture of MT# 481, but I don't see how to edit/fix that.

Id say there are enough differences to warrant a separate page.

Hello,

Sorry that I did not respond sooner, I hadn't seen this message. I agree that MT#480 and MT#481 are different enough that they can each have their own page. I did split original page into 2 and updated each page with variations of legend that I could find:

- MT#480: N#539441

- MT#481: N#45177

I also kept this other page with value at top of reverse as it is a significantly different coin, not mentioned as is in Moser-Tursky.

- MT#481 var: N#128433

I moved collections accordingly except for that 3rd page which previously contained all MT#481 even though it is a rare variant.

Note: a few months ago I made a big update of Tyrolean coins with denominations ¼ thaler and above; I still need to update the smaller denominations…
