Roman Monogram Type Follis? [solved]

7 posts • viewed 129 times

Hey guys,

Trying to ID this folis, but coming up short on the catalogue. No Emperor seems to match. Lettering on back is cut but seems to say OHTIH or so.

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

First of all, you forgot the measurements.

Secondly, I am having the feeling that it is Byzantine instead of Roman.

Can the obverse lettering be DN I(…)?

So far, looking on the Byzantine coins following this lead, the closest I've found is: N#302553

I don't know if I'm following the right track, so let's wait for other experts before saying “case closed”.

Hi,

The weight of the coin is about 0.75 grams and the diameter is 11.5 mm. Its a pretty small coin. It likely is cut down however.

The Earth is a Triangle

N#214486

N#280694

This is the closest i can find, does anyone have similar coins I can compare it to?

Hm, I think I can discard the Carthage coin, due to the smaller cross.

The Justinian is 50% larger than yours, it can be ruled out too.

Good find on the Theodosius II, it is a closer match than the other two. But I'm not sure if it's the same. If we could read more letters on your coin… Could it be D N THE…?

Sorry for the late reply but I do think it can be. I also looked it up on tesorillo and found this:

Also my first coin from the Eastern Roman Empire I believe. Covers Jordan on the map finally, and now I can move on to the other bronze I got at the same time as this guy.
