1 Penny 1946 Help!

7 posts • viewed 137 times

Hello, colleagues! I’d like to ask for your thoughts on something. I’ve come across a rather unusual 1946 UK 1 Penny coin. The coin itself is quite ordinary, but the color is very intriguing. For comparison, I’ve attached photos:

  • The first coin is a 1948 Penny in standard condition.
  • The second coin is a polished Penny from 1920.
  • The third coin is the one in question. It strongly resembles some sort of coating.

Here are the details: weight - 9.32 g, non-magnetic, diameter - 30.8 mm, thickness - 1.7 mm.

Has anyone come across something like this before? Please share any information you might have. Thanks in advance!

Someone plated it with gold or maybe brass. It's not unusual. There are many posts in this forum about funny color coins.

Agreed. Here is one of mine, for example:

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

Super! This is very interesting information. However, it’s completely unclear who did this and for what purpose. Is there any point in making such alterations to coins of minimal denomination? Perhaps only as a souvenir... I’m very curious about the value of such a coin. Are there any significant differences? Does anyone actually collect such coins?

No, you can never know, who found it “funny” to do those things to a coin, but many chemistry / physics teachers did it in class.

No a molested coin does not bring anything extra, on the contrary!

Vc deve aferir o seu peso. Se foi realizado revestimento ela deve ter acrescido peso, por pouco que seja.

Read the first post. Weight is there. Gold plate can be only a few angstroms thick. Weight is meaningless.
