2000 commemorative Welsh Dragon one pound coin uk [solved]

My coin does not have the Welsh inscription on the rim.

It only has the standard latin inscription found on general uk one pound coins, around the rim.

Does anyone know if this is a minting error ir not?

Thanks for your advice in advance. Best regards

You probably have got a Counterfiet coin. There are plenty of Counterfiet 1 pound coins around. The people who made them were always making mistakes like that. Putting on the incorrect date etc.

This is the correct 2000 coin with the correct edge lettering.

Hi Mike thanks for your  advice on my coin.

You feel I have probably got a counterfiet.

Do you know where I could get the coin checked out?.

If you go to this website

https://thefakepoundcoindatabase.co.uk/

You will find the one you have got

It is on this page

https://thefakepoundcoindatabase.co.uk/2000.html

Cheers Mike

Thanks again Mike for your patience, and your helpful advice.

I will check out the site.

🤛

Hi again Mike.

Once again your advice has been so helpful.

I went onto the s ite and compared my coin to the fakes on the register.

My coin has all the basic flaws the register  examples have.

1. The latin “Deus et …”.. was only used on the English  coins, never the Welsh.

2. The letters are malformed on the rim.

3 The parallel lines around the rim  are not crisp, across it..

4. A  flaw line runs down from the Dragon's  front  to its front leg.

Now the register has confirmed my coin is a fake, what do I have to do with it?

Can I just throw it in the rubbish bin, or do I have to give it  back to some police department in England?

I did'nt buy it.

It was in a packet of coins left over as loose change from when I was last in England in 2009 on holiday.

So that,s the end of my feedback.

Thanks once again for taking time out to help me.

Hi - Glad you were able to find out all the info on your Fake 1 pound coin. 😁

I wouldn't throw it out or take it to the police. We actually have a section here on Numista to record them. I would keep it as a curiosity.

I have got a few myself, so many of them were counterfieted is the reason they swapped over to the new 12 sided £1 coin in 2016.

This search result will take you to the ones we have recorded on Numista.

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=royaume-uni&r=&st=54&cat=y&im1=&im2=&ru=&ie=&ca=3&no=&v=&a=&dg=&i=&b=&m=16&f=&t=&t2=&w=&mt=&u=&g=&se=&c=&wi=&sw=

Yours isn't on there so it would be good to add it 😄

You can click on the "Duplicate this page" link on the bottom of one of those coin pages to create a new page.

You just change the details on the page you create.

Take care - Mike

Hi again Mike,

Thank you for  your new advice.

I will go on, record it, and keep it as a curiosity.

I read that around 50 - 60 m were counterfeited over a few years.

The articke suggested that the counterfeiters m ade them for around $ 0.10 sold them to distrubutors for $0.30.

There must gave been a few criminals enjoying their

ill gotten gains  from buying stuff with them.

Thanks again for your very helpful new advice.

It’s one of the known fakes using the wrong rim text for the coin

Hi Offa,

Thanks for your additional advice.

I have now applied to have it put on the Counterfeit page, as Mike explained to me that Numista does not have a live example on the database.

I have also as Mike suggested , kept it as a curiosity.

Finally I gave added it to my collection to swap, in case any member is interested in it.

I put the request to add the coin to the page: N#395116

No new page needed unless it is the 4th portrait of the queen then a new page is required. But it would be exonumia as that's what counterfeits seem to come under.

Year line has been added - Regards Mike

Dear Mike and Peter.

Th a nk you for adding my sumission

Just making a sense check here guys, whilst I understand we're talking about counterfeit coins here, is the 2000 year line meant to be on this page or does that have the 4th portrait obverse?

I did ask the question, but no response. There is a 2000 fake with 3rd portrait so does exist…

That asppears to be my one, I reqyested be added to the counterfeit page. It has the date of 2000 on it.

Best regards.

@bizpac I have scrolled through the thread and can't find any pictures of your coin, which is usually needed to confirm where it needs to be located. Would you please share hi-res images of both sides (and, ideally, the edge) so we can put this to bed.

Hi,

I had posted in My Collection, my photos I took of the coin.

It has Obverse, Rverse and side view.

Go into My collection, and you will see the pics there.

Best Regards.

It is a 2000 coin with the 4th portrait.

Best regards.

Hi,

You will find the photo I took of the incorrect words on the rim of the coin, in my CreationRequest page.

Best regards.

Hi Bizpac - If it has the 4th portrait then it should not be on the page that has the 3rd portrait.

I have removed the 2000 line from that page.

Your Fake £1 coin needs to have a new page created for it.

Please submit it by using the "Duplicate this page" option on the bottom of this page >>> N#395116

Change the details as required including pics of the coin.

What is this site coming to?

So now we create [and approve] pages for counterfeit coins?

Unbelievable :(

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

Hi Zac - We have had them on the  Exonumia pages for quite some time. You would be amazed at how many there are out there. Not just UK 1 pound coins either.

There were kind of hidden a little when they were in Exonumia but with the re-organisation of categories they are now included in the “Coins” category.

Because of that I think a few more of our newer members will become aware of them and possibly start uploading them. They are an interesting part of Numismatics and having them on Numista helps to inform people of the Counterfiet issues that are out there.
