US 1975 "No Mint Mark" Proof Dime Sells for $506,250

The 1975 Proof sets were minted at the San Francisco Mint which put the mint mark S on the coins. Several (only two known) were released without a mint mark.  The only other one known to exist sold at a 2019 auction for $456,000.

There may be more that haven't been found yet.  The Proof sets originally sold for $7.  I bought one. I have no idea why the dime is rotated 180°. It came that way from the mint.

Unfortunately, yours is not the valuable one. Although you may say that the mint mark is not above the date, it is only because it is below the date in this photo…

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

I really didn't believe I had the third one known.

It seems to me it would have been more valuable if kept in the original set — am I missing something? It just looks like a Philadelphia issue except for the finish. (For those who don't know, the “P” mintmark started to be used only from 1980.)

Of course, it's probably a challenge to have a set graded by a TPG company…

The Auction House (Great Collections) which sold it actually did offer the rest of the original Proof set along with the graded coin itself:

OK, but it still is outside the set.

But I agree the fact that the set comes along, and with documentation as they say, is a big plus.

Yep, that was really cool that they included the documentation and the rest of the Proof set along with the sale.  I was watching this auction when the last 5 minutes came around.  There were bids being submitted within the last 60 seconds.  Nobody knew how high it was going to go.

I have seen TPG's grade sets all together within a single multicoin holder before.  But I imagine that because of the value of this particular coin, PCGS most likely demanded to take the coin out in order to weigh it and do an inspection of the coin's edge (which you can't see when it's enclosed within the plastic) for the sake of due diligence.

As an aside, I'm glad that Rsirian1 mentioned that his dime was rotated.  I also have one of these exact same sets and the dime in my set is also rotated.  I always thought that was strange and wondered if it was just my set that looked that way.  No, I don't have the “No Mint Mark” version of the dime because I definitely looked!

Still, 0.5 % of the owners of this type owns the rare 1975 no mintmark coin. Amazing, isn't it?
