1775 King George III Farthing - ???

5 posts • viewed 97 times

I found the coin below amongst some other coins purchased last weekend and think it might be something different.

On first appearances, it's a KGIII Farthing from 1775 (N#13152), but the ribbon in the King's hair is slightly different, the end of his nose is much lower, and his chin is more pronounced.  Also, the tops of the 7s and 5 are straight, not tilted, and the laurel in the hand of Britannia points towards the N not the A.

The size and weight are off too, with my coin measuring just 21mm, not 23mm, and the weight is approx.3g -3.5g  in stead of 4.93g.  This is a thin coin too, about the same thickness and size of the Spade Guinea gaming token (below).

… not at all the same as a regular farthing from around the same period (below).

Any thoughts or suggestions?

as you can see… not all are lined up with the “A” :)

If you don’t mind, could you take a clearer photo with better lighting? :)

And are you sure it’s 1775? Notice the “7” in previous dates

The 7s seem to line up parallel with the base of Britannia, but I must admit that I can't really see the last number any more clearly than on the current photos.  I'll try to get a better picture with someone else's camera.
