Hello,

does anyone know whether CNB in Prague will exchange small CZK coins into banknotes at their cash-desk?

It is possible for example in Germany, Austria and Switzerland…

Thank you for any advice!

in the end everything will be good - if it's not good, then it's not the end...

No, neither coins nor banknotes can be exchanged.   Even the 20-CZK and 50-CZK banknotes issued after 1993 until the end can no longer be exchanged at the bank.

Ivan

Thank you Ivan,

in fact I know they exchange the old banknotes 100 to 2000 CZK into current ones (not the old 20 and 50, and also not the „old“ 5000 which was not replaced by a new version).

Just wondered if it makes sense to take my small change with me, which I understand from your post, does not make sense.

Keep the change.  The exchange wouldn't even make sense.  Changing 5 CZK for 5 CZK is nonsense.  All CZK coins have a higher price than their face value.  Sometimes many times more.

Here you have random sales on ,,Aukro,, Just put in google,,Aukro,, and you can sell.

But I will advise you where you can exchange those embarrassing unsightly euro banknotes for beautiful old coins of all kinds.

And here I recommend you about 100 meters from Wenceslas Square in the center, it is tucked away in a side street but the gentleman is honest and just tell him what you are interested in and he will show you and he has reasonable prices.

These are all the coin shops in the center of Prague,

This is the one recommended by me, "George", - Jiří

I recommend this - it's in the underpass of the Czech National Bank and it's a shop for everything minted by the mint as well as sets of circulation coins and everything new - gold, silver

Thank you again.

Just to be precise, I was speaking about some 1000 CZK in current 1 CZK + 2 CZK + 5 CZK coins. Not the old ones from Czechoslovakia.

Exchanging them at CNB would have been great, as I will go anyway to get rid of exchangeable old CZK notes.

But I will get rid of the coins at the supermarket over time - in TESCO for example they have those self service cash desk that accept coins or to buy metro tickets. Little more effort, but will not kill me :-)

in the end everything will be good - if it's not good, then it's not the end...

Hello,

In fact, you can exchange all current coins for banknotes in the ČNB for free. You just need to have them sorted out by denomination and bring max. 100 pcs of each denomination. If you have more, you have to pay the exchange fee, which is around 5% of the whole value I think. Or you can also exchange the coins under same conditions in any commercial bank which has a cash teller (you can have a look at the websites of different banks as to which branches do have such a teller). In this case, however, the fees for higher quantity of coins are generally higher.

perfect, thank you for this information  😀

You're welcome.

Some years ago I brought some 1200 Kč in coins with me to exchange, and was able to cash them in easily at a Starbucks in a stripmall just northeast of Praha. So to answer your question yes bring it all. Please update with your findings at the CNB, I too have some of the older 1997 series notes and will be going in a month.

Hi,

worked fine at CNB.

No issue at all on my older CZK notes, also no problem with the coins.

At the entrance they have an airport style scanner that you have to pass,

then pick up a waiting number and go to the counter once the number is called.

Took me less than 10 minutes to be out again.

You get brand new banknotes and unc coins. Got 50 CZK and 20 CZK from 2023.

best wishes
