KM is the numbering system used in the Standard Catalog of World Coins. KM numbers are intended to identify the type of a coin.
 

It should be noted that KM numbers are unique only per country. For example, the number KM#1 is shared by hundreds of different coins: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?r=&ct=coin&ca=3&no=1
