Already August in New Zealand, so lets start this. The July thread only started on July 4th and I don't want these threads to be slower starting than New Zealand winning medals in the Olympics (Just 2 in 5 days, we were up to 8 in Tokyo by day 6).

Just one coin for a start

A worn 1929 50 cent coin from Canada. This is worn (good VG) but scarce. Normally Canadian quarters and halves before 1937 are much harder to find than later ones. One reason is they wore quickly (Lots of dateless KGV and earlier ones), and mintages were very low like a few hundred thousand to a few thousand per date. Plus there were large parts of the 1920s in which 25c and 50c coins were not issued, whilst the 10c and lower were issued in higher quantities.

They had 25c notes issued in 1920 and claimed that there was a surplus of 50c coins at this stage. The fact they dropped from 92.5% to 80% silver in 1920, no matter worried as the silver price jump of 1919 fell back in 1921 meaning they could afford to keep old coins in use, without people hoarding and melting them for the silver!

This 1929 is one of the more common ones at 230k issued, it was the first 50 cents since 1920 (Well the 1921 mintage was melted and of a course a few escaped). Another another semi decent mintage in 1931 (55k), numbers of 1930s 50 cent coins were very low until 1937 and George VI and even then 37 to 39 were low numbers. Only in 1940 did numbers of 50c coins jump into the millions.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

one of the latest commemoratives released commemorating the 75th anniversary of the republic . Here you see the new triangular parliament building that was inaugurated last year in front of the previous circle parliament building. The old building will be converted into a museum

Another one from the Bombay mint, commemorating a freedom fighter and politician. Not the best of coins, not the worst of portraits either.

So this was the surprise my friend got for me last month but only just got round to collecting it.

It is only the restrike edition from 2020, but still it's beautiful. Perhaps more beautiful than the original strikes as they're to a higher polished quality. Lovely presentation box too, with all the original packaging & COAs too.

Been a set I've admired for years as I love mythology, especially European. But always been a bit too pricey for me to buy.

And I got this limited edition (limited to 100) bank note pull pretty cheaply. It uses the original copper plates from 1731, and was produced in the same way as an original.

So it's as close to an original without being a true original.

Still, it's pretty cool.

a ”lower“ denomination coin. Usually the authorities avoid making NCLT pieces when there is a denomination that circulates and in this instance is bimetallic. However this might have been planned well before the Rs20 coins entered into circulation. Again, a nice strike from the Bombay mint

never heard of this person, but I must admit the quality of the portrait is a very good likeness When I see his photo next to it . Normally front facing portraits don’t work out well on coins imo

Some great additions already for the month of August.

That 1929 half dollar is a nice problem-free example. As you said, most KGV 50 cents from Canada are scarce to come by. I just had a little look into it further, there were apparently ~185mil 1921-dated coins originally struck, but an estimated survival of just 75 pieces!

The 1731 Banknote is another lovely addition to this thread, and I am sure is a fraction of the price of an original! Really interesting the original copper plates have survived and were used to produce that piece.

I have got one item that arrived at my local post office yesterday, that I will pick up some time this week. I will post it here once I have received it. I look forward to seeing what else is shown this month.

I bought the final 2 coins for my American modern Morgan and Peace dollars of 2023 (They are releasing it all again for 2024)

The other four are near the end of July's thread. These arrived August 2nd, so count as August coins.

I bought them privately, so no auction seller photos. Apologies for these as I did not want to take these coins out of their case and we had glare due to sunny winter weather.

Here is the Peace dollar Proof and the Uncirculated Morgan dollar. They are more beautiful in person. What I love is the quality of striking, these things are flawless! Marks on Liberty's cheek are on the capsule, not coin.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Opening up calcutta sets now. Unfortunately That mint can be Problematic in the way they handle coins. However this one seems overall decent though I can see a couple smudges which I’m hoping are on the plastic and not the coin. The ram krishna mission temples generally a design very similar and they are all very beautiful to see in person

I was fairly lucky to get this one. Apparently only 250 were available on a first come first serve purchase online Which I didn’t know at the time. Perhaps more have been sold at the counter of the Calcutta mint or a wholesaler. But as one can see, both the plastic cover and the coin itself are smudged Unfortunately.

Lovely pieces. I've been a huge fan of the Morgan and Peace 100th anniversary strikes. It combines classic beauty with modern technology so it's really what can rarely be called “a perfect coin.”

Take a penny, leave a penny... or two

I just bought a lot of 32 roman coins for 100 euros. Turns out there is a crispus, magnentius maiorina and stuff that is waaay more valueable then the 3 bucks i paid for each :)

This was my biggest purchase yet! My plan was to sell half and make my money back but they are all awesome (except some) so ill just keep 'em XD

Also a few Greek and provincials, i think the value of some of one of the provincials compensates my spending entirely :)

Tell me if you guys want some pictures (most of you probably already noticed the flooding of id&v, sorry again ;))

PS the 30 coins im adding to my collection is like 50% of the number of coins in my collection before the purchase…

I love them too, not usually a fan of overpriced modern proof replicas of classic coins, but these I made an exception as they sold out and I agree the quality of the coins is stunning, the US Mint did an amazing job producing coins that are basically works of art in my opinion.

a total of 2500 pcs.

And the post office also delivered me two new magazines for numismatists, one has coins in the other a bill.  At least I will read about these states and other numismatic articles.

here’s a Rs1000 which is the highest denomination that the coinage act allows for. There have been a couple other coins of such denomination . From Calcutta mint, not too bad condition for one of their proofs

The Niue coins are interesting, they will hold value as they are mainly in silver and the themes seem to be popular, but not really my cup of tea. Those magazines are interesting - that note is a bit better, its actually worth a few cents in the real world (Guyana $1 = 0.006 NZ cents, so that note is worth 12 cents) - How many issues will there be.

Yes, with those magazines, the value of either coins or bills is really low.

But there is the fact that it is UNC and also interesting remote locations, unsearched.  It is not easy to get a UNC banknote of this quality into a collection.  The value for a normal collector is not very important.

That is why I also showed the purchased investment dollar 1 OZ.  Mimozenštáné - issued by the Czech National Mint disappeared immediately after the publication of the issue.  It is really a silver value, well marketable for the future.

And thanks for the opinion.

one final set to open up. This one commemorates the 90th anniversary of the RBI. Odd theme, but not the first country to commemorate the 90th something or a central bank. This is unique however because it’s the third time this design motif appears after the 75th  and the 50th anniversary pieces

Here is my first addition for the month - an Australian 1927 1 Pound Banknote.

This is a banknote I have wanted for quite some time now, so I am quite happy with this example. This one is in the average condition these are typically found in.

When this note was issued, Australia still used the gold standard, meaning this Banknote was redeemable for 1 pound in gold (i.e. 1 sovereign).

Very nice, banknotes that old are insanely rare. Its a beautiful design too!

Here's a sovereign it could have been redeemed for.

+1

I agree but  I wouldn't call it “average” but rather “well above average” condition wise.

This is a banknote I have wanted for quite some time now, so I am quite happy with this example. This one is in the average condition these are typically found in.

Most of the King George V notes I have seen are Good to Fine (with crappy eye appeal) but I would say yours is closer to VF25 with excellent eye appeal.  The Fine grade means that there is design worn off at the creases, some soiling  & I don't see that on your note. It appears to be a clean crisp example with good paper quality (just folds). I'm surprised to see the label as gF & If you paid a “Fine” price then I think you did exceptionally well on your example b/c I'm pretty sure that a TPG co like PMG would award that more VF20-25.

Here's a note I picked up after seeing Moneytane's banknote acquisitions in May (older examples from Tonga).  It is P-28 (1992) 10 Pa'anga:

https://sites.google.com/view/notaphilycculture/collecting-banknotes

Nice 10 Pa'anga - I only have the 1 Pa'anga of that type (1992 undated). But I do have a complete set of the 1995 notes (1 - 50 Pa'anga) all uncirculated and the 1 - 20 of all the later series. I have found all those early Tongan notes hard to find now and quite expensive.

VF20 - 25 really equates to our fine. The Australians like New Zealanders use a harder grading system like the British where basically F12 is VG, VF20 is Fine, XF40 is Very Fine, AU55 is EF and MS60 is AU with only MS63 being true Uncirculated, so his fine would be your VF.

Similar to UK, but we insert Good and VG for their Fair (Our Fair is like yours). All those rumples would definitely make the note Fine in our money, maybe goodFine as the detail is sharp and clear. Its still way above average for its type.

Just got to remember we have harder and higher standards in the British world, than loosey goosey USA/Canada.

Back from a vacation in  Azerbaijan. Baku is an incredibly beautiful city. the rest of the country is not quite there yet, but one can see the oil money changing all that

I went to the central bank to get some souvenir coins. It was quite the experience with all the red tape security protocols, took me back to the 1990s Bombay mint days lol

heres the first one, 85th anniversary of Nakhchivans autonomy. I saw the gold variant in the national history museum

here’s the second coin I picked up at the central

bank in Baku. I picked the previous one for a historical theme. This one for me seemed nice because I do plan to visit the caucuses over time with georgia being next. Apparently Azeris cannot cross by road/rail into Georgia from their country, but foreigners can. However Im not sure what is the current status of this train

third coin from the bank… 1 manat Wrestling, part of a 5 coin set. I elected just for this one as it was 24Manat while the entire set would have been 125M… about 100C$ which I think was overpriced. However I liked the de sign of this coin and as it turns out the Azeris won gold in wrestling at this olympics

Good day colleagues.

The older son was on vacation with his family in Rimini, Italy.  He was shopping in San Marino.  And so he thought of me too, bought me this little set of San Marino coins.  I just have the impression that they are all anniversary coins, I haven't studied it yet, it's been a few minutes, it still smells like the sea and the waves.

I had to add: a strange 2 euro coin is 16 dollars here, and 1 euro is 7.60 dollars.  Weird - a little too much.  No?N#117669

Ivan

I actually have that set, I bought it in 2014 in San marino, they haven't changed the graphics much.

But they do sell their own coins at ripoff prices, i remember every shop at the 3 towers sold machine guns, stamps and coins!

They sold coins at usually 3 - 20x face value mark ups. I remember my set cost around 12 euros and it was mixed dates. If you wanted one with all the same dates, it was around 40 euros. They even had trays where you could buy separate denominations at marked up values like 10c at 50c etc.

The reason was just 100k or so were issued of San Marinese euro coinage compared to hundreds of millions of the usual coins (Most coins used were Italian not surprisingly, but I remember France, Germany, Austria featured heavily too. I got lucky at the Museum of torture as they gave me a 2 Euro coin of San marino in change and it was a date I didn't have

Its the same thing in Vatican - huge mark ups for their coinage.

while i was in Azerbaijan, I was looking for the newer 1, 3, 5 qapeek coins. I didn’t see any of them in change and even at a MacD, they rounded up to the nearest 10 qapeek. i Went to the central bank where they told me to come back the week. So they are not demonetised , but definitely next to non existant in circulation.

so it was quite random luck on my flight back to Bombay, I should spot this 5qapeek coin on the floor of the aisle on my way back from the bathroom. whats more, this was just half hour before the plane was about to land. Kismet!

Loads of beautiful coins from across the eras this month. 😲

You're getting really close with your state quarters now!

And good fortune finding that 5 qapeek when you did.

And love that Australian note too.

Myself, not having much luck at all this month with banks or shop change. Few duplicates but nothing to fill in the final few gaps. Still, that's the thrill of the hunt.

Besides, I got a very rare, though not especially valuable, book for one of my series sets completing it. Been after a copy for about 10 years now & it's never been for sale that I've seen (and I've looked!).

And a new coin book about Britannia & how she's evolved over two millenia, which has been interesting thus far.

So a bad month for currency but a good month for books. 😁

@33doubleeagle, nothing special, I'm just buying them for the collection:)

One of my favourite coin designers. He also designed the South African series in 1923

He designed images, the words were changed several times between 1923 and 1953.

I honestly thought with a name like “Kruger” he could be South African, but he is English Jersais.

All Kruger Grey's work too

Just in today: 1988 HSBC 50 dollar note and 1941 Colonial Government 10 cents. The 10 cent note was a chance encounter while I was meandering around a mall. I have been searching for that particular variety since 2021 and managed to catch the shopkeep toying with one and I knew I had to snag it right away, in what was one of my biggest “now or never” moments in the hobby.

Jamais l'or n'a perdu la plus petite occasion de se montrer stupide. -Balzac

Been real busy with my university course and various dramas I have every August, so coins have taken a back burner this month.

Here's some of the stuff I have bought in the past fortnight, none of it earth shattering.

Canadian and Nordic (Denmark, Sweden and Norway) coin collections I paid around $20 each for. All base metal, but good series of dates and dups. The Canadian group had some nice 2013 $2 coins special designs and several 2000 and 2013 commem quarters in high grade (Whale and Salaberry), also some nice nickels (1947 AU) and a 1983 50c piece, plus some UNC 1987 and 1989 Loonies.

The Nordic mix included 12 x 5 Kroner coins from Sweden and a similar number from Norway, all in high grade. It was cheap as all these coins except about 25 Krone each in Norwegian and Danish coins (There was a 20 Kroner worth $5 our money) is now demonitised, although I think the 10 Kroner coin of Sweden is still legal.

1861 Indian Head cent of US, cleaned and worn (G6 - VG8) with a big scratch, its a decent example of a more scarce date of this series. It also completes my 1857 - 1865 penny run!

1906 UK 3d, VF or better, mainly bought as its cheap and fills a date gap I don't have.

1862 Rupee with no dots, possible Madras as its only 30.5mm and I can't find a Bombay mintmark, yet the plant type at top suggests Bombay (Mumbai).

1887 not sure which mint (Bad picture and I don't have it yet). I bought it as I don't have an 1887 Rupee yet. these coins are cleaned, worn and have some damage, but unlike my high grade ones, they were very cheap like around $28 each. The nice ones I bought in June cost like $50 to $150 each).

1878 UK shilling, really worn, cleaned with coppery solution - but cheap and again fills an annoying date gap. I usually buy these coins when I can't be bothered waiting for a nice one to pop up. When I do find a nice one, I usually give these coins away or use them for my stacking collection (Afterall its got $8 of silver in it).

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

I hope all are happy with their new acquisitions.

I have just received this Hudson's Bay Co. 25 cents scrip made of cardboard with fabric on the back:

Larry Gingras, Medals, Tokens, and Paper Money of the Hudson's Bay Company (CNRS 1975), no. 365.

I posted no. 367 ($1) in the June thread.

Here’s another addition of mine for the month of August. This is an Australian shilling from 1933. This coin quite obviously has many many problems (cleaned, corroded, worn, &.c.) but it is the key date for the shilling series, with an original mintage of 220,000.

Its still pretty good, a beast of a coin to get. Mine is not as corroded, but much more worn than yours.

Its there with a really worn florin and a penny I use to bait Brits, “You know I have a 1933 Penny”

As you may know no 3d or 6d were minted between 1928 and 1934 and the halfpenny I just don't have.

Compared to most Halfpennies of the world, Australian ones (Especially before KGVI) are really hard to get.

Thank you very much! I am quite happy with it. Quite a number of the ‘pre silver’ Australian KGV coins are becoming scarce, especially in above fine condition.

If only that 1933 penny was a British one! Yours is in nice condition and much better than mine, I cannot tell if it’s an overdate or not from the photo.

I have got one of the 1933 half pennies, this one with 8 pearls.

I think these may be his [Kruger Gray's] work too, Canada's coins got a massive make over in 1937.

The 50¢ is indeed his work and you can see his initials “K G” on each side of the crown. The 25¢ was designed by Emmanuel Otto Hahn whose initial “H” is at the very bottom.

Of the current circulating coins, the 5¢, 10¢ and 25¢ all still have the 1937 design. The 50¢ was modified in the 1950s but it's a circulating coin only in the legal technical sense since 2003.

My new coin - quite rare one from a Khan that ruled for a very short period of time

N#362500

Timur Khoja was the eldest son of Khizr Khan. He organized a conspiracy against his father, as a result of which Khizr and his youngest son were killed, and Timur Khoja ascended the Golden Horde throne. He ruled for two-five weeks (according to different sources) and managed to start minting coins in New Saray.

The Horde nobility was hostile to Timur Khoja from the very first days of his reign, which was taken advantage of by the beklarbek Mamai, who rebelled against the new khan. At this time, Mamai declared his protege Abdallah (a descendant of Uzbek Khan) to be the khan.

Not having the strength to confront Mamai, Timur-Khoja fled beyond the Volga river, where he was killed.

Despite being a Percy Metcalfe style - this is also Kruger Grey

I know the Fiji florin reverse is attributed to Kruger Gray in Numista and elsewhere, but I have doubts. The Royal Mint records ascribe all the Fijian reverses to Percy Metcalfe - and as you observe, this is more in Metcalfe's art deco style.

More Scandinavian pocket change. I like the change in shield from O II to H VII.

silver stacking, nicer pieces

more interesting LMU era silver

lastly, some OZ shillings, just worn stuff but better dates.

I need a new camera.

Not really, just turn off the light in the room when you take photos and try and take them in natural daylight rather than artificial light.

The coins are really cool.

Agree totally, metcalfe was all about the Art Deco style and KG was purely Empire arts and crafts style.

I suspect KG thought of the design and conceived it but Metcalfe drew  it. Mainly as KG's speciality was shields and imperial devices.

I've added three banknotes in August during my travel in the Caribbean. And these are:

N#213278 and N#213281 , both from an ATM in Sint Maarten. Unfortunately only in VF condition, but since they will be replaced next year, I thought I'd keep them.

I have also added this one: N#202467 year 1996 from an ATM in Saba. Thks tol, was unfortunately just in VF condition. I also got a 2006 in same grade I'm planning to spend.

Hi to whoever is reading this. Did you know that TYPEWRITER (on a QWERTY keyboard) is the longest word you can type using only the letters on one row of the keyboard.

Both were from 2016.

I had to check, and yes indeed it's listed as demonetized. I will change this. Thanks!

The new Caribbean guilder (Caribische gulden/Florin karibense) is planned to be introduced to Curaçao and Sint Maarten on 31 March 2025, and then be the sole currency after 30 June 2025. So yes, I should've come next year instead. 😅

A couple more Kruger Gray additions, from the smallest denomination to the largest (not shown to scale!):

And another KG:

Nice the Cyprus crown is a stunner.

New Guinea silver shillings, I have 80 of them as bulk silver coins. There are 4 dates, 1935, 1936, 1938 and 1945.

Thanks! I am still looking for the smaller New Guinea denominations from 1935 (1d, 3d and 6d) - all by our hero KG.

The Penny

Threepence issued 1935 and 1944 (Very small and cupronickel)

Sixpence issued 1935 and 1944 (Also small and cupronickel)

There were also pennies and halfpence issued in 1929 as patterns (Now very rare) and these are Cupronickel - apart from the penny, these designs are quite ordinary by his standards.
