1 Thaler - Maria Theresia "Madonnenthaler"

I'm selling this coin on ebay. What do you think how high will price go ?

You are right it is beautiful, but rare? Surely it's a restrike?

As to the final price... is the mount and chain also silver? If so you may wish to add that to the description. (Unless of course it's already there and my poor eyesight missed it)

I had few Maria Theresia thalers, but never saw this particular "madonnenthaler".
Yes, mount is also silver but chain isn't. I think there was silver chain in first place, but someone replaced it..

Mostly people look for Maria Theresia in Austria, however this is a Hungarian issue, here is the original: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces18112.html

It has been restriked extensively (specially the year 1780!!!), and from the pic I cannot tell whether it is an original from Kremnitz (Körmöcbánya) mint or a later restrike. It is surely worn, plus to put a coin on a chain shall be a crime in its own right!

If it would be not on a chain (which I think actually decreases its value), and if it would be original, you could get the value of about USD 110-150,- for it in this F condition. It is not particularly rare, but it is rarer than its Austrian brothers with the Habsburg eagle.

If it is a restrike, than it's about bullion price + 10%

I am curious also, how your eBay auction ends!

Knowing that Arabs valued - how to say politically correctly - mature overweight women - I am not surprised    - Our good old Königin surely showed the right traits.

I have the trade coinage saved as a wanted item here ha ! I missed one on eBay the other day for £10 and was devastated ! I would love this type as it's beautiful but it wasn't used in any British colonies I know of ! Obviously the one we mentioned was re-struck by us for use in Aden !

If you need a justification that it fits your solely British collection, be assured that it was used as trade coinage on the searoutes all the way from Zanzibar to India, including the Gulf when most of those lands (and waters) were British.
I picked up about a dozen of them (don't be envy, in a bad shape ) in Sharjah (Emirates) flea market...

Thing is I think I want a circulated one rather than BU like alot of them are ! So the Maria Theresa 1780X traded in Zanzibar too.. interesting to know ! What is a madonnenthaler then ?  I would have thought they would have just used the same one :S

A Madonnenthaler is a nickname of a Hungarian issued Habsburg Thaler. Most often it is used for the one above. Hungary and Austria had a monetary union under the "Kaiser und König" (Emperor and King) times, when the Habsburgs held the both of titles of "King of Hungary" and "Emperor of Austria".
The monetary union was pretty much the same as the EURO today, same central issues under different design.

The Hungarian and the Austrian coins in this time have identical characteristics (weight, size, metal, etc.) in the given year. The Hungarian issued coins, specially 6 Kreuzer and above had the Hungarian characteristics, the Madonna with the child [Jesus], the symbol of the Hungarian Patron Saint, St. Mary.
A lot of the coins has the lettering: "PATRONA HUNG S.MARIA MATER DEI" or similar: PATRONA HUNGARIAE SANTA MARIA MATER DEI" meaning: "The Guardian Patron of Hungary, St. Mary, Mother of God".

As the coins were in circulation in Austria, as well, the German speaking folks, just called it Madonnenthaler or Madonnenkreuzer. If you browse through coins of Hungary from 1560s to 1914 you'll see a lot of "Madonnas".

In return, in Hungary the Thalers with Habsburg Coat of Arms, were nicknamed as "EagleThaler" or "Sasostallér" in Hungarian.

I like this one currency stuff.. That's what we should have done throughout our empire.. Saying that it wouldn't have been so interesting like it is now though !
