MINT OF VALLADOLID

Name in the Local language: Ceca de Valladolid

Place: Valladolid, Spain

Dates of operation: 1466-1471, 1559-1686

Description:

(EN)

The first monetary workshop in Valladolid was created in 1466 by Enrique IV, near the Church of San Benito. His period was short-lived, it barely lasted five years.
During the Reign of Philip II, a new Mint was established on the current San Lorenzo Street, created by the privilege of Philip II on July 2, 1559. The mint was maintained there with Philip III minting hammered coins.
During the reign of Philip IV, in 1661, milled coinage was introduced and the building on Calle de San Lorenzo was abandoned as other facilities were needed for the new machinery. For this purpose, some mills were rented on Zurradores Street (currently Panaderos), which were equipped with mechanisms like those installed in the Real Ingenio of Segovia.
During the time of Charles II, coin manufacturing returned to San Lorenzo Street, where hammered minting continued. Those were the last pieces made in the Valladolid Mint, which closed its doors definitively at the beginning of the 18th century.
