India 5 Rupees 1995 Edge

I expect the reverse and obverse to be weakly struck through grease but I haven't quite come across an edge like this.

Based on the picture of the security edge on the page, this looks rather off.  I'm not particularly into varieties or errors so I don't quite know how to describe it properly. But the security edges

are usually incuse (not sure what word to use) as in it digs into the edge like the picture but this does not. I can't tell if it's weakly struck or a regular reeded edge was struck over it?

Also there are large and small dots on the security edge but I see no reference to which is which. They look fairly large?

I occasionally see examples like this where the security edge isn't completely imprinted. The Indian mints never cease to amaze.

As for the size, I believe your coin has large dots as well.

Ah, thank you. I have many a weak strike from India on the reverse and obverse.  I suppose I should not be surprised they're capable of doing it to the edge as well, just hadn't noticed one before.

I was sorting my extra Indian coins this week so I was able to look into this more. I have 4 coins with this issue, all are from the Calcutta mint and have the large-dotted edge. Whatever the issue was, it seems they were never able to fix it, as the dates range from 1993 to 2000. It also seems to be relatively common, these 4 coins are out of the 13 with this type of edge that I own.

The Indian mints never cease to amaze

Hello and best regards.

This is not just from the Indian mints - this coin was minted by the mint in Moscow-Russia for India:

And here is an example of how a 5 rupee coin has both a reed and a safety margin:

Here is an example of another 5 rupees:

In Indian coins, the original safety edge is often rubbed off on the edge, and a fine reed traces behind it.  This is my opinion.

I'm aware that Moscow also minted this type. Their coins are very consistent in the quality of the security edge, so not really relevant to this thread.

The coin you posted that does have the issue being discussed is also from Calcutta mint, with the large-dotted edge.
