These marks are, indeed, PMD. They were done with some pieces of metal lying around and have no meaning to them. Anyone can do this even without any tools: a rock and a couple of broken pieces of metal will do.
I follow the terms “countermark” and "counterstamp" on eBay and all the time I see guys trying to pass such defaced coins at a premium.
Likewise, a single letter punched on a coin almost always lower the value of a coin. On Sunday I won this Newfoundland 50 cents:
not because the countermark is interesting (it actually defaces the coin) but because I bid below bullion value and won it anyway.

the pattern impressed on the opposite side is somewhat interesting.
It might have been the point of the exercise was to take an impression of a pattern on a material.

I was thinking of a vise, so maybe not punched but imprinted with a vise.

The marks on the coin seem to be from a vise.

Good call! Perhaps the penny was being used as a soft vise jaw while working some small parts.
I admit Ive used pennies for similar operations involving a pipe wrench, to prevent cutting into a chromed fitting.

And as Beekeper's example shows, vises can of course have various patterns on the plates screwed to the jaws.
I have an antique vise with no pattern which you can see in this older thread …

Oh, my only purpose in linking to that topic was to show the vise. I didn't even think about it – I could have just downloaded the picture and posted it here again not to offend anyone:
