To merge or not to merge Icelandic banknotes?

7 posts • viewed 97 times

I am spring cleaning the Icelandic banknote catalog and was begun to rethink some of the entries, if they should be merged, due to the only differance being under which law they were issued, sjown in the obverse, center left.

This will of course require a bit of work, but I think it's managable, to merge them, if that's what people are up for? Need to add dates for all the notes (the law under which they were issued) regardless, which I'm unable to.

Thanks for all inputs :D

I don't collect these notes, but as you describe it, the only real difference is the Law Number & the date below it?

If so, I'd merge them. The Scottish notes (which I do collect) do have variants where the only change is the date (example: N#224545).

I think that's a much neater way of filing them & removes bloat from the catalogue. Would be a good thing to have as the universal rule in my opinion.

The merge page could include a note telling people where to look as to make it easy for new collectors to understand & choose their variant more easily.

I would not do any merge. Like you pointed out, there is a text difference.  I also noticed a dramatic color difference in the last of the red notes.

I think merging for just the sake of merging is not a good reason for merging.

I disagree that this is a “bloat”.

Without having these notes in my possesion, I'm almost sure the colour difference is mainly due to lightning and quality..? Note sure, just speculating though.

I have some year change to request from a master referee, but what do you think of how I have done so far? Suggestions? 🤓

+1

This would be the position of many banknote collectors (I suspect) though I could never confirm this. I have seen several disastrous mergers here on Numista practically making the NRI moot (IMO). No previous catalogue has merged so many different series (as far I can tell).  If there's a change in the design/plate (whether it be a date, security thread, etc) it is typically relevant (like it or not). This essentially means that the classification of the note/series changes & catalogues should NOT arbitrarily merge such classifications. Seeing P-42, 46 (etc) under a note's ID is super troubling & a trend I hope to see less of.

I'll keep them apart then.

Follow up question. The two modern 5000 Krónur notes are made in two batches for 4 different issues, but due to design similiarities and same text, they are grouped. Should they stay together? I think it could couse confusion if they are split, with only difference being signatures or actual year of issue, which isn't a clear visible change… Right?

My main “concern” is each of the two 5000 Krónur entries belong to 2 series each.
