And here's a fave coin that doesn't get much love:
Common, low-value and easy to find in high-grade, but the obverse features my favorite portrait of George V and the reverse has striking Art Deco lettering. Very nice piece underappreciated in my book.
A kind of revolution in the design of coins. The tiny Long-eared owl almost apologizes for being there as if the off-screen which represents the opaque night was reversed and the owl itself became the off-screen. Dizzy

Yet, it's been a long time since I wore cufflinks
Why the 10-franc coin struck and use was stopped ? I sent fews days in Belgium at the end of the 90s and i was surprised to see a gap between the common 5 and 20 francs.

thanks, i do like that coin. george V had a cool portrait but in my opinion the best photo/painting of him was that picture of him with a cigarette

they were only produced between 1849-1850 and again from 1969-1979. they were withdrawn in 1985. i couldnt find anything about it but i did find that the 20 and 50 franc banknotes were replaced with coins in the 80s, so perhaps the other way around? it wouldnt make much sense though
My guess is their size. 10 Franc coins were 26 - 27mm in size, where as the 20 Franc was just 24mm and 50 Franc coin was 21mm. Also I think the silvery metal was out of place with the brass coloured new 5 Franc and brass 20 Franc.
The 10 Francs was a holdover from the 1950s, when the 1, 5 and 10 Francs were all Cupronickel. Francs lost a lot of value in 70-s and 80s and it was not justifiable to leave the 10 Franc as a large cupro nickel coin, when other coins were tiny cheap steel things. The 50 Franc was the same el cheapo metal as the 1 Franc!
Late 80s Belgian coins (The 50 Francs is Luxembourg, but the same planchet and value as Belgium). The one Franc is a teensy (15mm) stainless steel thing. It seems all the coins were shrunk.
Agree about Canadian nickel, but not all were cheap to get, many dates in grades above VF cost a lot. Introduced for practical reasons as the silver 5 cent coins were just so teensy and hard to make (The thin planchets easily cracked - reasons why the British abandoned silver 3ds in 1944). Its a nice design though and better than the beaver that succeeded it. Still Canadian nickels are much nicer than USA Jefferson Nickels.
My best nickel is this 1929 in AU.
Nickels look deceptively shiny and fresh well down the condition scale though.
That looks fresh from a glance, but George is well worn down to high Fines in this 1922 coin. I have seen shiny nickels like this in VG condition where George is a silhouette with a bit of moustache and crown fused to head.

its the shine and the coat of arms
OK, so it's not the portrait, you like the coat of arms? What is significant about the coat arms?
Personally I don't like the portrait.

Agree with Moneytane about finding higher grades at cheaper prices - not going to happen, I just went to a show last week and upgraded many coins but only one of this type.. The silver 5c coins he alludes to that produced up to 1921 were indeed very small - they are nicknamed “fish scales"
