Hi Admin

There must be something we can do to stop members, especially newer ones, from using “?” in the date field when they add a new coin or Exonumia.

They should be using the ND field if there is no date on the item.

Can we add a script that pops up if they do put “?” in the date field that diverts them or prompts them to check off the ND box?

Regards Mike

The ‘?’ is automatic.

If no information is entered on the date line, then the ‘?’ is automatically added when you submit.

Do you want the site to automatically tick the ND box instead of adding a ‘?’ if no date is entered?

..or just prevent the submission going forward until they have entered a date, or selected ND?

(edit)

At the moment if you don't enter anything in the ‘Sources’ box the submission pauses with the message:

Please specify the sources of the information.

So basically the same thing but for date…

Please specify the year, or select the ‘no date’ option.

That sounds like a great idea!!

I did not know this. 😲

I like the second option with the pause and message prompt. It will force the user to either enter a date, which they might have missed, or tick the ND box if there isn't a date.

I spend a lot of my time validating exonumia entries and I am always editing them to remove the “?” and checking the ND box or sending them back for editing.

Maybe they do it because it looks like that's the right option?

You are probably right, but it is a pain to have to change it all the time. - Mike

annoying also when then the person who submitted the sheet ads it in their collection as ? as then you  cannot change or delete the year line and have to ask moderators to do it.

Or you add it yourself and then ask the moderators to move the owner and to delete the ? yearline.

It does happen often and yes its annoying.

I completely agree with what has been said above. The second option from @inc7007 would be very good!

Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno

Any concern I could think of is that people would add widespanned ND ranges for tokens.

Is that an actual issue though? Maybe gain outweights the problem really in this case.

I would already be happy if I could change the dateline where someone added this dateline in their collection.

Please specify the year, or select “no date” (ND) and enter the year of issue in the two fields.

This follows what is stated in the Guidelines.

I thought the ability to add coins to unpublished pages was done away with a long time ago. Am I misremembering or did it come back?

I was under the impression that this was about the creation of new pages. Any yes, you can only add your coin to a new unpublished page if you created it.

More precisely, you can add it to your collection if you can find it.

Maybe for Admin but us peons will only get this if we find it:

I personally would like it if on a new submission that the member submitting the new submission was also restricted from adding it to their collection till after approval. I think that to may encourage completion of the page if modification requests are made.

I created a new page and added my medal to it. Then I cancelled the request before it was reviewed.  It still shows up in My exonumia.

Yes it does, and will till you remove it from your inventory. That is the reason I said…

You can not search for it, but it is there in you “collection” and you can export it with the rest of your collection

YES it's annoying !

Even when I ask to the member to include the date before I validate, the “?” Line stays.

Why cannot the referee change this “?” by a date.

For exemple :

A member suggested this half-arsed file to me with a line beginning with "?".

In a laborious effort to educate the masses, I suggested a few changes, notably to replace “?” with 2023.

Hello, I can't validate this coin due to the absence of the date : In the field date, you must put 2023 instead of ?
I can't make this modification myself.
You may include also these following modifications :

Ruling authority : Charles III
Issuing entity : East india company
Type: non circulating coin
Suppress issue date cause it must be filled when different to the date written on the coin
Manufacturing technique : milled

My efforts were poorly rewarded, and we end up with two lines: one with the "?" and the other with 2023.

And he added (still a long way before he can create an acceptable file

It seems to me that the referree or the member  could change this "?" before validating the file.

This is not possible currently.

Referee of south atlantic islands

Absolutely I would also ask for that as Referee we can change the erroneous "?" to a date, even when a member added it to his collection.

The same thing happened to me a few days ago, hehehe. I asked him to change the "?" to the year, and I got two lines: one "?" and the other with the year. I was lucky that his coin had been placed on the year line with year, so since there weren't any members on the "?" line, I was able to delete it myself.

I think the user who creates the page should get a warning saying "there can't be a year line with a "?" symbol".

I've also noticed that users, with the new "Issued" field, put the coin date there, maybe thinking it shouldn't be placed on the year line. This new field might be a bit confusing in that regard.

You're right, same thing for my example.

I've been also authorized to delete the line.

Problem is I get this every day and most of the times the person adds the item with ? into their collection and then it cannot be deleted or modified.

Simply disallow adding non validated items to a collection (like I thought was already done quite a few years ago … maybe it wasn't technically possible and what I remember was only that you just can't see non validated entries as a third person) and referees have a chance to edit the creation requests and correct them before validation.

Frenchlover …. I admire your patience regarding your efforts to educate the user above. I laughed at his comment “I have made some improvements is it OK now?” …. I have been there too.

Like this if an item gets validated 30 days later I would for sure forget to add it to my collection.
