We need to have ‘Sovereign’ added as a new currency for Gibraltar.

Aidan.

As far as I'm aware, the sovereign is just an old name for the Pound. ½ Sovereign is equal to 50 Pence or before 1971 10 Shillings.

I still don't even understand why the Gibraltar Crown is its own currency..? Shouldn't it be a crown under the pre-decimal currency..?

Sovereign should be a denomination not a currency as far as I am aware.

Yes those are denominations within same currency

I would give the referee time to decide if crown is appropriate or not.  Crown is a pre and post decimal denomination.  And just like in the case of Isle of Man, it had a corresponding value that did not always match the value that the UK assigned to their crowns. Until 2017, I think, the crown in Isle of Man was valued at 25 pence.  It only became valued at 5 pounds more recently.  Perhaps there is a similar anomaly in Gibraltar listings?

Crown, what is your opinion? For me, it is about this crown in particular, since it's the only crown which have seen circulation:

The modern Gibraltarian Sovereigns are NOT part of the decimal Pound currency.

The post-1971 Crowns should be under the Crown currency.

Hi,

Yes, it's true that in fact there are only two predecimal coins denominated as 1 Crown (one mentioned by you and the silver version). At the time, 1 crown was ¼ of the predecimal Pound. All other 1 crown coins are equivalent of 25 pence (0,25 of Decimal Pound).

As Oklahoman wrote, Isle of Man switched for crown from 25p to 5 Pounds value in 2017 but I never heard about similar switch for Gibraltar. It seems that decimal 1 Crown is still worth 25p - at least according to this document: Gibraltar Coinage Act 1990 (version updated on 2024)

Please see: Part II. STANDARD COMPOSITION, DIAMETER AND WEIGHT OF GIBRALTAR CROWN COINS. (below the table).

For the moment, I would prefer to keep as it is, with the crown as separate currency. With the new currencies/values database, I guess this should be easy to do changes by Robot if needed in the future.

For sovereign - I noticed this problem too few days ago when I added three IOM silver coins described as Sovereign (without any value nor currency name on it - btw: sovereign made from silver… sic!). Gibraltar Coinage Act is not consistent about these coins denominated based on the diameter size - in the table there are once listed as sovereign, once as sovereign/pound.

Therefore I would prefer to keep sovereign the same was as all other British teritorries (= under the Pound currency). The same for IOM too. Anyway, the Sovereign as separate curreny is already rejected by Numista Team.

There are also Guinea coins issued by Gibraltar (not yet listed in Numista). Need to think what to do with this…
