Mailing collectables

Readers are invited to give their experience with collectables sent by mail overseas.

My experience is as follows:

I mailed a parcel (280 grams) of coins from Australia, with tracking, to Reunion Island.

A customs declaration form was filled out with the description :

“Numismatic hobby material, for collecting purposes only”.

This I have done hundreds of times in the last 20 years, apart from occasionnally a parcel going missing

in the mail, with a perfect rate of success.

However, today (January 24, 2024) my parcel to Reunion Island was returned to me with a label

stuck on the parcel that mentions: "This item has been  returned because the requirements to clear pre-departure

customs have not been met."

Is this something Australian? or do collectors from other nations have similar problems?

What a nuisance – something may have changed in the requirements.

And interesting that they don't tell you what the requirements are, in order to help you meet them. Shades of Yes Minister here.

Even during the chaos of Brexit, I never had anything returned in such a manner (UK).
