Bank Tokens - A New Type for the Catalogue?

1 post • viewed 23 times

At least four European countries issued bank tokens during the early 19th century:

Austria

Denmark

Ireland

United Kingdom

along with various issues in Canada and elsewhere. Most are listed as tokens but some are given as standard coins. Given that their status was distinct from private tokens and more akin to bank notes, should we have a separate type of “Bank Token”? It might help us to determine which tokens belong in the main coin lisiting for a country and which belong in local listings.
