This is my first guide I will be writing covering the identification of China Junk Boat Dollar please bare with me.

Reverse

The reverse depicts a junk boat with two-mast.

Common Counterfeit Technique of Junk Boat Dollar

•  Cast Counterfeits

•  Transfer Die Counterfeits

Point of interest 1

Look out for the design of two human figure on the middle of the boat and another two human figure on the back of the boat. On poorly made counterfeit this design is usually missing.

Point of interest 2

On the reverse the portrait of SYS can be seen outline because of a good strike.

A way to identify Junk Boat Transfer Die counterfeits is that the details are mushed such as the ropes on the sail. The design should be sharp and uniform in other words consistent.

Hello

Thanks for this topic 👍

Very intresting, actually I am searching for a nice 1934 one, for long, but I am afraid of the forgeries indeed.
So thanks for this helpfull information.

...you can run,  but you can't hide...

Good information. Thanks for posting.

Good afternoon,

I was curious if you can help me with 2 coins I inherited.  I believe they are just re-makes etc. and not authentic.

Thanks, JD.

Would fakes still have the correct weight, diameter, width - and non-magnetic? If so they presumably still have the correct ratio of silver and copper. Is that right?

No, not at all. Fakes vary, some can be made with some silver, others are not. Although the dimension such as diameter can be close to correct almost all dont quite weigh correctly. Sometimes they will make the fake thicker to account for some of that weight so measuring thickness is an important factor. A magnet test is a fundamental step regardless. Detecting counterfeits takes may steps as there are many varieties of fakes out there.

Ive had the misfortune of encountering fake junk and fatmans which where made of silver where the only real way to discern them where due to lettering being all wrong sized and to weakly struck to be real

Thank a lot! I was very interested in them, but couldn’t find any info on how to find a real one.

Nice. Could use you as an expert.
