Hi all,
as part of research for a project, we're trying to establish a simple but as-accurate-as-possible monetary system that was in effect in late 17th century Istria. The Istrian peninsula was back then divided between the Republic of Venice and the Habsburg monarchy.
What coins were used at the time? As mentioned above, the project needs simplicity, so we have to cut a lot of them that were used and instead set at a maximum of 3 coins. Further on, for the sake of simplicity, it would be good to have all coins used on both sides of the border, not divide them depending on the territory. I know, the simplicity damages the historical accuracy, we're aware of that. Don't focus on that, instead please try to give some suggestions so that we end up with something in between the accuracy and simplicity.
This is the list we have at the moment:
1. Zecchino (Gold Ducat) - gold coin
2. Thaler - silver coin
3. Soldo - copper coin
Ratio: 1 Zecchino = 2 Thalers = 150 Soldi
As experts, what would you recommend in terms of the list and the ratios? Should we replace the Soldo with some other coin made of copper? We thought this to be ok, since we combine coin names that were used on both sides of the border.
The project (a video game in the early stages of development at the moment) requires us to have gold, silver and copper coins. We can't change that, but we can change the names and the ratios. The ratios are important as they influence the amount that should be paid for items (example: in shops).
Thank you in advance.
