Turkey 50 kurus 2023 question

6 posts • viewed 251 times

I have a km  1574 coin, that should be bi metallic.

The coin I have clearly has single color, there is no white ring. Both parts are gold colour.

Is that an error coin?

Either that, or the composition has changed in 1923….

If they have to save money why not use a solid planchet instead of using two rings out of the same material?

Edit: it seems they are a bit different after all  and you can see the color difference also on your picture, but it is a bit difficult to see.

These coins are bi-metalic, but with slightly different alloys of nickel brass:

Core: 81% Copper, 4% Nickel, 15% Zinc

Ring: 75% Copper, 15% Nickel, 10% Zinc

On this page N#363213 I can clearly see the color difference.

On my coin I can't.. But I see that there is a new entry for this year coins maybe its regular one at the end.

Thanks

Of course the Turkish Lira has lost a lot of value now and the 50 Kurus coin is worth a few cents only.

When released back in 2009, it was worth around 50 cents.

I would not be surprised if a new series of coins was to come out soon. The Top value 1 lira is no longer useful and can not justify its elaborate bimetallic construction.

They should have coins up to the 10 Lira and even 50 Lira by now.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.
