…to Bharat?

And if so, would it lead to currency changes?

Will be interesting to see what changes to the catalogs it would bring if it happens.

HoH

I don't think India will have its name changed - as English & Hindi are both official languages in India.

Aidan.

It’s highly speculated in the Indian media for sure. The opposition parties have formalised a coalition with the acronym INDIA in the last few months. With elections next year, it’s less likely a coincidence these things are connected. As we speak there is a special parliamentary session ongoing to mark the 75th year of independence as well as the first sitting in the newly opened parliament building. So we will have to wait and see if this comes up over the next 3 days

The English version of the constitution (it was originally written in this language) only mentions Bharat once in the very first article. Thereafter all reference to the country and institutions have “India” or “Indian“ in it.

i believe the current govt has the numbers to push a constitutional amendment to rename everything exclusively to “Bharat” if it so chooses

There would be huge opposition to the idea in southern Indian states - as Hindi isn't even spoken there.

English is preferred in southern India as a linking language.

Hindi is spoken in northern Indian states.

Aidan.

Among south Indian languages, India is referred to some form of the local variant of Bharat .

Hindi was envisaged to be the national language of India and the constitution states it as the goal, but to be implemented with consensus. They indeed tried to do it in the mid 60s which caused the language riots in the south and east After which they abandoned the effort. However as the Northern populations keep growing while those in the south have stabilized, as well, hindi through its soft power grows as a lingua franca, it’s not impossible one day that the Push for one national language may come up again

i personally think there is no benefit to the country to rename to Bharat à la Turkiye. “India“ has a lot of positive brand recognition especially these days and when you’re trying to build tourism or project soft power in general, why write off that goodwill

Coins of the Republic of India have भारत  - INDIA written on them already for a very long time, and the Hindi lettering reads as ‘bhārat’.

Indians among themselves use the name ‘Bharat’  more commonly than ‘India’, at least, that's what my Indian colleagues told me (but they were northerners).

Just in case, we should get in front of this and change all the associated names so that nobody can find anything:

British/Danish/Netherlands East/West Bharaties

British/Dutch East/West Bharat Company

etc

That is patently false .These would Probably be the same people would would also insist Hindi is THE national language. if one speaks in English, one never says Bharat. similarly when one speaks in Hindi or other regional dialect,  it is normal to default to Bharat/Hindustan . Though people will say India even while speaking in Hindi in major cities.

In music and literary works, Hindustan is the other common name

Don't give anybody that idea, please, it'd complicated enough to find the good, old countries now🤢

The special Parliament sitting is over and it seems there was no proposal to rename the country to Bharat internationally. That is not to say, it won’t come up sometime in the future. But for the moment, I’m personally relieved :)

Hahaha, that’s hilarious.

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

Unfortunately, it's straight to the point, today it's too complicated to find a country!

I've seen rumors that Pakistan may consider renaming itself as “India” if the Republic of India adopts the “Bharat” as its primary name, as much of the Indus valley is placed inside the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Is it feasible or just a tongue-in-cheek joke? I guess the second.

A side note: I'm curious how it would be rendered in my native language Portuguese. For a while, “Bharat” could be used, but eventually such a famous country would gain a more native-like name. “Barata” means “cockroach” and “Barate” sounds similar to “cheaply”, so perhaps media would settle for more phonetic “Bárate”? If so, would it be a grammatically male or female noun?

I’ve heard that meme running around as well. In the end, Pakistan was styled by Jinnah  to be simply India For the muslims.

in Hindi/Sanskrit, Bharat is Feminine and is also personified as Bharat Mata (Mother India).

The “Vive la France” equivalent in Hindi is “Jai Hind” or “Bharat Mata ki jai”
