Selling my collection

8 posts • viewed 237 times

Rather than have my family try to sell my collection which is quite extensive I want to do it now. I actually had a cardiac arrest recently and somehow survived. So now I need the best advice to get the most out of it. Should I sell off bits and pieces? Should I just sell the silver ? If I sell parts which ones should I sell first? Help me please

As a start, I would suggest that you approach a reputable auction house and ask them for an appraisal of your collection with a view to selling.

They would not charge you for this, and normally would request a list of the collection, with catalogue references and approximate grade.

This will give them an overall idea of what is in the collection.

Alternatively,  you could offer the collection as a lot to a dealer, in which case you should approach several dealers at a one of the big shows to get an idea of value. A dealer will typically have a 100% margin on a bulk buy like that.

Hi rmuniak,  Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hope your collection gets the best valuation.

You might sell here all your ‘bin value’ coins which will not be valued if you sell as a lot.
Is it because I just offered you a 'swap' that I say that?
Expect to receive lots of proposals here 🤪

I'm sorry to hear about your health setbacks. I hope things turn around for you that way.

I just looked through your swap list & my suggestion, if you really wish to downsize, is to get super organized.  Get some help if you need to.

You have almost a 33/33/33% split between “Bin Value”, “Numista Value” & “Krause Value” listed beside your banknotes which I find confusing for notes which range in grades from VG to UNC.

So #1: I'd REVISE all those to an actual Dollar Value for each item & aim for the low side on most of them (if you wish to move/swap them). Place an ad that you wish to swap for USD $ (any condition, if this is the same for your coins- clarify exactly how much you can take for each coin).

Remember you (or your family) will get bottom dollar at your LCS so try to be generous b/c your aim is to downsize/shrink your collection. While getting organize make sure you have a hard copy list/inventory of what you have & strike off anything you sell/swap or get rid of.  Try to keep the list regularly updated

#2 Register/join as many sites as you can to get the word out that you wish to sell your coins/notes (& list lots or individuals coins/notes when you're allowed to).

#3 Start creating “lots” for VG - VF notes (by nation) which you know are worth about $1.00 each and list these either on eBay, your local Kijiji or on some site which allows you to list your items.  You may even do this for UNC items if they're low value. Check out my SITES & FORUMS page to join on other sites & don't be afraid to try social media provided you meet serious potential buyers who can transfer the funds to. your account.

#4) Save your best items for an auction platform & get these grouped organized to ship out to whoever you wish to use OR sell them yourself on eBay (this could take a while).

Good luck!

I sent you a PM, but the system encountered an error, I want to make sure it went through.

Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Looking for pre 1783 coins

BTW: I also skimmed over some of your other # banknote collections & saw many modern issues worth FV (at best). The CDN polymer $10 & 2006 $5 + Costa Rica's polymers you can exchange right away. Do this without delay since some exchange outlets stop exchanging older issues & that will save you the hassle of swapping/selling for little (if any) gain.
