A Strange Coin

9 posts • viewed 383 times

Hello everyone! I hope your week is going well. I was given this coin along with some others as a gift from a friend at the local coin club as i have a big interest in foreign coins.  This is a odd 10 Cash from Kiangnan Province, China issued in 1905. I believe this is some strange damage, however im not sure if it is indeed post mint damage or if it is some weird error. Any help or info is welcome below are the pictures and other info

Hello, imo it is definitly PMD. It seems to me the coin was rolled in something.
Maybe a washing-machine, but not likely, given the year…

...you can run,  but you can't hide...

I agree definitely post mint damage

Or someone wanted to make a ring out of it.

Thanks yall! I was honestly thinking maybe its a holder for a small candle or maybe it was made a clanker for a bell or chime of some sort

Hello

Maybe a game puck

Many french coins are like that

I have seen coins like that, but they are usually silver. After tapping it a long long time on the edge, the center is drilled-out and it becomes a ring.

Are you sure? Reforging a coin before drilling out a part of it seems like a very wasteful and impractical way to make a ring.

I've seen youtube videos of people making rings out of coins, and the process is entirely different from what you describe. The coin is gradually inverted using progressively more sloped conic tools so that the ring clearly shows the coin's face on it. There is no tapping involved, and drilling is minimal to make a small hole for even stretching.

“Edge-hammered” is the usual term for this. It does look similar to the effect of a tumble-dryer, but that seems somewhat unlikely in this instance, unless a collector somewhere was VERY unlucky with his pocket piece.

Yes! I have indeed had private minting done. And yes, the die is in my possession.
