Hi,

I stumbled upon this coin.

It is from Louis I, the lord of Piedmont and (claimed) prince of Achaea, from the house of Savoy. He wasn't the main ruler of Savoy and it seems like it was more a claim of Achaea than actual reign over it. So the last thing left is Piedmont, which currently isn't on Numista.

But that's just my uneducated take, so other input is appreciated!

Best,

Trooper

Yes, in MEC XII,  there is a section on Piedmont, County of (p. 197-204; corresponding coin types #168-173) ruled by the Angevin kings of Sicily/Naples (and counts of Provence)  who used the Cuneo mint:

House of Anjou, Counts of Piedmont

Charles I (1259-1276)

Charles II (1305-1309)

Robert the Wise (1309-1343)

Joanna I (1343-1382)

… followed by a section called Piedmont, Princes of Savoy-Achaia (p. 205-220, corresponding coin types #174-187) who used the mints Turin, Pinerolo and Moncalieri:

House of Savoy-Achaia, Lords of Piedmont

Filippo I (1295-1334)

Giacomo (1334-1360, 1363-1367)

Filippo II (1367-1368)

Amedeo (1368-1402)

Ludovico (1402-1418)

By the early 1400s, all these places passed into the hands of the House of Savoy, which we already have as an issuer.

I don't think we will ever have more than a handful of coins under either set of ruling authorities, so I would propose we combine them as an issuer “Piedmont, County and Lordship of”

You can create simply "Piedmont", attach all rulers and create ruler groups “Lordship of Piedmont” and “County of Piedmont” which will allow them to appear as issuers. You'll find examples of such ruler groups in the last created ones (you have to set “1” in the right column to indicate this group is an issuer name). Do not hesitate to ask me if you have any question!

Here an example with Berg: N#109437

The issuer Italian States > Piedmont, and the ruling authorities for House Savoy-Achaia have been created, so you should be able to add the coin.

Why is it not lordship or county? Seems a bit inconsistent with the catalog to just have it as “Piedmont”.

When name changed, we do that (county and lordship appear on entries)

Yeah, that's my point. Piedmont doesn't:

N#373024

Oh indeed. But we only have lords here for now, so I renamed it Lordship of…

If at some point we add counts, we can go back and use ruler groups to differentiate
