French Oceania vs Polynesia VS Settlements of Oceania..confused

7 posts • viewed 203 times

I just got 1949 French Oceania  2 Francs coin and the 1967 French Polynesia 20 Francs coins at a coin show this past weekend.  Looking these up I see “Settlements of Oceania” as well.  Can someone explain the differences of these three?

Thanks for any info, I've done some googling but still am not clear.

A ChatGPT summarisation with the highest factual setting but take with a grain of salt.

French Oceania, also known as French Polynesia, is an overseas collectivity of France and its sole overseas country. It comprises 121 geographically dispersed islands and atolls stretching over more than 2,000 kilometers in the South Pacific Ocean1. The total land area of French Polynesia is 3,521 square kilometers, with a population of 278,786 (Aug. 2022 census)1. French Polynesia is divided into five groups of islands: the Society Islands archipelago, comprising the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands; the Tuamotu Archipelago; the Gambier Islands; the Marquesas Islands; and the Austral Islands1.

Polynesia is a subregion of Oceania, made up of more than 1,000 islands scattered over the central and southern Pacific Ocean. The indigenous people who inhabit the islands of Polynesia are called Polynesians2.

The term “Settlements of Oceania” generally refers to the history of human settlement in the region of Oceania. The first settlers of Australia, New Guinea, and the large islands just to the east arrived between 50,000 and 30,000 years ago3. European exploration and settlement of Oceania began in the 16th century, starting with Spanish landings and shipwrecks in the Mariana Islands, east of the Philippines. This was followed by Portuguese landing and settling temporarily in some of the Caroline Islands and Papua New Guinea4.

In summary, French Oceania refers to a specific overseas collectivity of France in the South Pacific Ocean, while Polynesia is a broader subregion of Oceania made up of many islands. Settlements of Oceania refers to the history of human settlement in the region.

I think this paragraph from the French Wikipedia pretty much sums up what I think you were asking.

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89tablissements_fran%C3%A7ais_de_l%27Oc%C3%A9anie

“The "Établissements français de l'Océanie" (French Settlements of Oceania in english and called Colony of Tahiti until 1903) formed a colony of the French Colonial Empire, which existed from 1880 to 1946, when they became an overseas territory (which officially took the name of French Polynesia in 1957).”

That is, both coins belong to the same issuer, named Établissements français de l'Océanie (Settlements of Oceania) until 1957 and Polynésie Française (French Polynesia) since that date.

There is a misunderstanding in the translation of “Etablissements Français”.

“French Settlement” is just where France reigns as the “Établissements français dans l'Inde” in India.

This is a good example that AI can't solve everything.
The question is very specific about the term "French Oceania" and the AI's answer becomes false by mixing all the data gleaned from the internet:

"French Oceania, also known as French Polynesia, is an overseas community of France and its sole overseas country."

- French Polynesia is not French Oceania, it's just a part of it.
French Oceania is all of the French possessions in the southwest Pacific, including New Caledonia, Wallis-and-Futuna, French Polynesia (to which the islet of Clipperton is attached).

- Historically "the French establishments of Oceania" called French Oceania on Numista was a colony while "French Polynesia" is now  an "overseas country within the French Republic".
