Selecting Grade for Proof Coins...and viewing the count I have cataloged

6 posts • viewed 48 times

I was recently using Numista to catalog some annual Uncirculated Mint Sets and Proof Sets that I acquired from my father's coin collection, and I questioned if I was entering them correctly.

I logically selected the Grade of “UNC” for each of the coins from the annual Uncirculated Mint Sets.

But then I got stumped when I was cataloging the coins from the annual Proof Sets.

In the past, I selected the Grade of “UNC” when I entered Proof coins that I had purchased as a single coin directly from the mint.  But this time, I found myself not selecting any Grade at all, because the coins were from a “Proof” Set, and not from an “Uncirculated” Set.

I spent the last hour reading through a Forum request for Numista to add the option to select “Sets” in the Numista catalog.

Proof and/or mint sets?  Posted: 1-Dec-2018 by greatone76

With the current options, which “Grade” should I select for a Proof coin?

Of course, if there is an entry to select a “Proof” version of a coin, I do select that, but it still asks for a “Grade”.

So which Grade should I select?  I'd prefer not to leave it blank, because then it reduces the number of “UNC” coins I have cataloged.

But I don't know how to view the number of Proof coins that I have.  Please advise if you know.

Thank you.

I faced the same issue and decided to add two categories, Proof and Proof Set and use UNC for them.  If I want to view the number of Proof coins I have I just look at those two categories.

Another way is to put Proof in the comment when entering the coin and using that in the search:

Proof is not a grade but a minting finish/procedure. You can have uncirculated and impaired proofs.

Thank you rsirian1, for your creative solutions.  Since all of my “Proof” coins are in perfect condition from the mint, I will assign the Grade of “UNC”.  I have been using Comments such as “Set of 7”, but I think I will clarify…

Proof Set of 7; or…

Mint Set of 7

I have never used the “Collection” field before.  Is that like my own personal “bucket” ?

Do you know if it is a Public or Private note?

If Private, I would add notes such as… “Dad's Collection” or “Brother's Collection”

If Collection is a Public comment, then I'll continue to enter my relative's initials in the Private comment field.

Thanks again for being helpful.

Each collection can have its own privacy setting from everyone can see it to only you.

Yes, just like individual buckets of coins that share a common connection.

The comment can be either public or private. Both are searched.
