The Australian and European Bank 10 pound note

9 posts • viewed 166 times

I recently found in my late father’s belongings a 10 pound note (number 08001) from The Australian and European Bank . Where can I go to find more information on it? Thank you.

N#218343 [1874-1879]

That is one of four pages on here - 1 10 20 50 Pounds.

It reads: Established in Melbourne in 1874. Absorbed by the Commercial Bank of

Australia in 1879.  The Commercial Bank of Australia merged with the Bank of

New South Wales in 1982 to form the Westpac Banking Corporation.

Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins

These notes are rare and valuable. You should research its value.

Early Australian banknotes are highly collectible and sought-after.

Also how does the reverse look like? Pictures would be good.

I’m not even sure this is real (although I have no idea why my dad would have kept it otherwise).

It is in very good condition. Would love to know how it came into his possession, but won’t ever find out.

Perhaps engage a local dealer and see what they have to say. Let me know as I can tell you where to go. You can try the same dealer at Strathmore, Ringwood or Clayton. Thanks

Thank you so much. I’m not far from Ringwood so would be interested in having someone look at it. I’ll keep you posted.

In the picture, your example of the note has a border, which theese banknotes do not have, compare it to the picture on this page:

Your note may be a reproduction of a specimen, or it might be mounted.

Looks like a souvenir card or a remainder (at best) to me (I don't see signatures or serials but maybe its the angle of the photo) + the borders are odd.
